Cleaning Your Car In 9 Steps

Breathe in. Breathe out. Ahhhhh!!! You smell that? YES, you’re right. It’s springtime!

A season of renewal, sunshine, fun and, dare I say it—CLEANLINESS! As much fun as it’s not, this is the time of the year to get your clean on and take care of some much needed spring cleaning! So set aside an afternoon to transform your stuff from messy to tidy—and please don’t forget to include your car.

Dirty cars, trucks, vans and SUV’s need love too!

Ask yourself these questions:

1) Are you a little embarrassed when a friend jumps into the passenger seat of your car?

2) Moms, do you hang your head low in car line?

3) What about on Friday night? Does your date step back in horror as he or she sits down in the passengers side?

4) Do you know what that strange odor is coming from underneath the seats? You know the one that’s an odd mixture of month old chicken nuggets and sweaty gym socks.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, now is the perfect time to do something about the state of your car.

So I’m here to help! Follow my guidelines to get your car back in shape for spring . . . for the sake of your friendships . . . for your sanity in car line . . . and especially for that “hot” date you’d like to go on next weekend (even if its with your spouse).

Think about how much better you’ll feel behind the wheel of your clean ride. Say goodbye to dirt and hello to a fun springtime in your clean and shiny car!

SPRING CAR CLEANING GUIDE:

1. Wash—Wash your vehicle using a mild soap and water. Then dry with a soft, clean chamois (or lint free towel). Don’t allow bird poop, bugs, and tree sap to damage your paint. Remove them as soon as you can because the eating away of your paint happens fast, especially with the stronger sun of spring baking down on your paint. Use a soft brush to clean wheels and NEVER use chemicals with an acid base. If your wheels are dirty, clean those first.

2. Polish & Wax—Your vehicle deserves and needs a fresh coat of wax on your car for spring. The wax serves as a protective barrier against the insects, bird droppings and tree sap that’s plentiful this time of year. And that you just spent hours cleaning off. In addition to that, wax keeps your car looking nice and shiny.

3. Replace Filters—Have your auto service center of choice (like Frank Myers Auto Maxx…HINT! HINT!) inspect your cabin air filters and engine air filters. Replace all filters if necessary. During spring these filters can become heavy with pollen, which negatively effects how your car runs.

4. Clean Screen—Clear the screen where the hood and windshield meet, directly under the wipers. Also clear out crevices in this area. You have to make sure and keep these areas free of leaves and miscellaneous debris so that they won’t absorb water, which causes rust, and which can cause sediment that will clog the evaporator drain. If you don’t, you could be facing very expensive auto repairs and no one wants those.

5. Pressure Check—Make sure your tires are set to the proper pressure because as temperatures get higher, air expands, so you may have to let air out of your tires. If you need assistance with this, Frank Myers Auto Maxx can check your tire pressure for free.

6. Interior Detail—Pull out your car mats. Vacuum carpet. Wipe down interior. Throw away garbage. Organize your trunk. If your carpet is stained, they can be cleaned at most professional auto detail centers.

7. Window Clean—Clean all the windows and mirrors (inside and out). Use a solution of ¼ cup household ammonia to 1-quart water. Apply solution with a sponge and dry with newspaper, paper towels or a soft cloth…but newspaper works best.

8. Clean Your Blades—Gently lift the blades, and wipe both sides with a soft cloth or paper towel soaked in a solution of ¼ cup household ammonia to 1-quart cold water. Dry the blades with a cloth and lower them back into place.

9. Shine Your Lights—Apply window cleaner to your headlights. Rub vigorously. If your headlights have become milky, they may need some additional TLC by a professional.

If you’ve followed steps 1 to 9 to get your car clean then you deserve a break! So take that shiny ride out to dinner. Bring a friend along. You wouldn’t want all that work to go unnoticed!!!

Happy clean trails to you! Until we meet again.

2013 Ford Escape Goes Green, Literally

KenafPlant_media
The eco-friendly gimmick war continues to rage on. On the heels of Chevrolet unveiling eco-impact labels on its new vehicles, Ford has announced that its new-for-2013 Escape will be made with plant material.

Ford is replacing some of the materials in the Escape’s doors with kenaf, a tropical plant related to cotton and okra. Kenaf is edible and looks like bamboo; it’s currently used in making cosmetics and paper products.

Ford says using the plant improves the vehicle’s fuel economy because it reduces the weight of the door bolsters by 25%. Its fuel economy gains weren’t specified, however. The automaker says kenaf will help save oil in other ways, too. Because the plant replaces oil-based materials previously used in Escape’s doors, “the use of kenaf is anticipated to offset 300,000 pounds of oil-based resin per year in North America,” Ford said in a press release.

When the redesigned compact SUV goes on sale this spring, kenaf will join Escape’s soy foam seats and head restraints, recycled-tire climate gauges and carpet made from plastic bottles.

Ford’s Escape certainly isn’t the first green vehicle. Land Rover’s new-for-2012 Range Rover Evoque, for example, is made with 35.2 pounds of recycled plastic, or about 1,000 16.9-ounce plastic bottles.

Happy New Year From Frank Myers Auto

It’s hard to believe that 2013 is right around the corner. Isn’t it scary how fast time goes by—I must be having more fun than I realize! Either that or I’m just getting old. All in all, it’s been a banner year around here. My Team of Non-Commissioned Sales Pros at Frank Myers Auto helped lots of people drive a nicer, newer car in 2012 and am looking forward to a repeat performance in 2013.

I gotta tell ‘ya – I’m pretty excited about New Years this year and ringing it in wit my wife and children. Ware you spending the holiday with?

I’ve come up with a few tips on how to make this New Years one for the record books and want to share them with you! Sure, we all can’t spend New Years at the Ritz and eating caviar but you can make it so you don’t wind up looking for a tree to kiss at midnight, or even worse, wake up to a mound of depression on January 1, 2013!

Tip #1: WEDDED BLISS

Are you married? You can skip down to the end because your decision is already made. Spending New Years with your spouse is a no brainer! But why not take it up a notch this year? Surprise your significant other with a gift or an upcoming trip at midnight. Make it one that he or she will never forget. Get your romantic juices flowing. New Years is the perfect time to be spectacular and there isn’t anyone on the planet that deserves it more than the person who puts up with you all year. Can I get an amen? You know it’s true!

Tip #2: DATE DIVINE

If you are single, decide whom you would most like to spend New Years with now. Don’t wait until the morning of to make plans. This strategy could backfire. Book travel tickets now. Get your party planned so that you won’t be scrambling at the last minute. Try the dating sites, ask friends for hook-ups . . . start exploring your options now because as you know, sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince (or princess). If all else fails, call your best friend now and plan to spend December 31st together.

Tip #3: HOST WITH THE MOST!

Nothing to do and no one in particular to spend this holiday with? One answer is to play host. Plan a New Years party that people will want to come to. Get commitments now before social calendars fill up. Then take time to really think out how to make your party fabulous. Pay attention to details, especially the music and atmosphere. Make it feel like a special occasion. New Years isn’t the time to scrimp on food and decorations. It’s the time to roll out your best. After all, you want your friends and family to come back next year, don’t you?

Tip #4: GET OUT OF DODGE!

So you don’t want to throw a party? Don’t have a spouse? And don’t want to date anyone at this moment? Here’s an idea: go somewhere exotic for New Years. If you’ve got the budget, you can spend this New Year snorkeling in the Caribbean or skiing in Vail? Why not take a New Years cruise? Hit Times Square or Rio de Janeiro. It’s hard to be depressed when you are on the go and in new surroundings so this strategy is a good way to keep your mind focused on the blessings of the past year. Who knows? You may even meet someone special while you are there. You may never come back.

Tip #5: MAN WITH A PLAN (OR WOMAN)

This is for all of you who choose not to practice tip 1 though 4. So if you don’t want to party, travel or snuggle on New Years, you have a couple of choices left. Stay home, ignore the holiday, or watch New Years celebrations on the tube. Or why not spend the night in deep planning mode for 2013. Take the evening to do soul searching. Figure out what you want to achieve in 2013, and then make detailed plans on how to execute your plans.

So happy, happy New Year to all of you from my family, my Frank Myers Auto Maxx Family and myself! Thank you for making my 2012! I couldn’t have done it without you! I’ll be toasting to all of you at midnight. And many more!

Hope this message helps to ensure that New Years Eve 2013 leaves you with a smile on your face. Wink, wink!

Car Paint – Doing It Yourself vs our West Chester Body Shop Painting It

Sure, you can attempt to paint your vehicle yourself.  Maybe you might get lucky and get the paint color spot on.  Chances are it won’t be a perfect match.  There’s a lot of factors that go into color matching and getting the perfect match.

colors

100 Shades Of Pigment: How To Match Automobile Paint Colors

Over time, your automobile will inevitably get scratched and dinged and require painting. Although this might seem like an unnecessary or expense there are actually many benefits of performing spot repairs and painting your car. Obviously, it will look better. The benefits are more than just cosmetic, however. Painting your car will increase its value as well as prevent oxidation and rust that can cause more serious damage. Even though there are a number of do-it-yourself paint products and how-to videos on the internet, you would be well advised to take your vehicle to our body shop in West Chester Pennsylvania rather than tackling the task yourself. We have the knowledge, skills and tools to achieve a high-quality paint match.

Variables That Affect The Color

At first glance, it seems like matching the color of paint on an automobile would be fairly simple. All you have to do is look up the make, model and year in a paint database to determine the paint number—right? Wrong. There are a number of different variables that affect the actual color of the paint that is needed.

  1. Pigment: paint pigment comes in powder form. There are hundreds of different pigment combinations that can be used to make similar colors. There can be as many as seven different combinations of pigments for the exact same make and model of car; in order to keep the database smaller, however, auto manufacturers usually limit the color combinations they enter to just two or three.
  2. 2.       Location: Automobile manufacturers typically have more than one plant that manufactures automobiles and more than one supplier for paint colors. The corporate office supplies a paint sample to the each and they produce a paint formula based on the sample. The paint, however, can have a color variance of plus or minus 5 percent. This means that a car manufactured in the Midwest may contain 5 percent more blue pigment while a car manufactured on the East Coast may have a slightly greener hue. Even though a database says the two cars should be the exact same color they can actually be quite different.
  3. 3.       Application techniques: even if two cars are painted with precisely the same paint formula, the application techniques used by the manufacturer can also affect the color. Temperature, humidity, time between coats and the speed of the spray gun can all cause variations in the color.
  4. 4.       Exposure to elements: Prolonged exposure to ultra violet rays from the sun will also cause colors to change by absorbing some of the pigment. Rust and oxidation can also cause color variations.
  5. 5.       Type of material: paint adheres to parts made from different materials differently. For this reason plastic such as the bumper, mirrors and door handles will have a subtle variation in shade from the metal parts of a car if they are painted with the exact same formula.

As you can see, there are a lot of factors that need to be considered in order to get an accurate color match. If you simply use a number out of a paint database the area you paint will look bright, shiny and new but the rest of the car will look dull and faded.

How A Body Shop Matches Colors

autob

With so many challenges, how does our body shop in West Chester, Pennsylvania—or any of our other 7 locations for that matter—match automobile paint colors? It is a very delicate process. First, we determine the base color. Then we use professional tinting techniques to achieve the best color for spot repairs. We tint the value before the hue and make modifications as needed. Once we have an accurate color, we will use professional blending techniques to achieve a color match. Many do-it-yourselfers make the mistake of painting an entire panel rather than blending which will ever look the same. A professional auto body shop also has the ability to create the ideal painting conditions for each type of surface. They can alter the temperature and humidity in each bay and speed up or slow down the application in order to achieve the most accurate color match possible.  Hands down, bringing your car to Grand Sport Auto Body for a seamless professional paint job is the best choice.   Stop in for a free quote & cup of coffee on us!

Transmission Fluid Change: An important Transmission Repair

A transmission fluid change, sometimes called a transmission flush, should be part of your regular vehicle maintenance, just like an oil change or replacing the coolant in your radiator. Regular service can help you avoid costly transmission repair. Generally, you should have a service every 24,000 miles, or every two years. Some manufactures recommend longer service intervals like 50,000 or 100,000 miles. However, these intervals may exceed any opportunity for you to identify problems early on so you can avoid minor problems turning into a major transmission repair.

Keys to Long Lasting Vehicle

New cars cost so much these days. Add financing and insurance and, well a new vehicle may not seem so attractive. A lot of San Diego, California people are hoping to make their cars last a lot longer.

The good news is that with the current state of automotive engineering and manufacture, there’s no reason a modern vehicle can’t be made to last for a 150,000 miles or more.

There is an old saying that says, ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ and that is really true when it comes to taking care of your car. A great example is coolant service.

Over time, coolant becomes corrosive and actually starts to damage your radiator and other parts. That’s why you need to have your cooling system serviced on a regular schedule.

The same is true for your power steering system, brake fluid, air conditioning system, differential and transmission. And your oil changes should be done right on schedule to avoid the build up of harmful oil sludge.

Don’t let your brake pads go too long before they are worn to the point that they cause damage to rotors. Preventive maintenance is a great way to keep your operating costs down.

Replacing belts and hoses is much cheaper than repairing the damage that can be caused by failure.

Now this is a lot to remember. Aero Auto Repair can keep on top of this stuff. We can tell you what your manufacturer recommends and help you with a plan to take care of it.

Bottom line – take care of this stuff on schedule and you will reduce operating costs, prevent costly damage and maintain your warranty coverage. Call Aero Auto Repair today for an appointment; you can reach us at 858-309-4274.

Take good care of your car, and it’ll take good care of you.

Tire Repair: 3 Tire Shopping Tips

Tired of the continual hassle of tire repair? It may be time to go shopping for tires. If this isn’t your first time, you are aware that there many good brands to check out. If this is your first time, it can be an over-whelming experience.  Selecting the right tires for one’s vehicle is not easy.  There are several factors to consider when choosing the type that will be best for your particular vehicle, rather than the ones that are the most widely advertised, or that are the most expensive.

Here are three main factors to consider when you are ready to make an investment in tires for your vehicle:

Differential Service At Atlantic Car Care: Vive ala Difference

Your browser does not support video

Every sedans on North Carolina freeways has a differential, and it is critical to the proper operation of the vehicle, but most Wilmington car owners don’t have a clue what it is.

The differential compensates for differing wheel speeds. For example, when you turn, the inside tire on the turn travels a much shorter distance than the outside wheel. So the inside wheel of the sedans must move at a slower speed than the outside wheel. Without a differential, the wheels would hop and scrape while turning.

Differential Service At Atlantic Car Care: Vive ala Difference Have you ever seen the large bugle-shaped object in the middle of the rear axle of a truck? That’s the differential. In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the differential is located on the back axle. Four-wheel drive vehicles and SUV’s have differentials on both the front and the rear axle.

You might expect that the differential is located on the front axle of a front-wheel drive vehicle. You’d be right. But the differential is called a transaxle on a front-wheel drive vehicle because its location allows it to be combined with the transmission.

In an all-wheel drive vehicle, an additional differential or transfer case is located between the front and rear axles. Differentials are strong: They have to be because of the critical job they do. But those tough parts need proper lubrication. You don’t want your differential to seize up. That results in pricey damage to your sedans.

So you need to have your sedans differential serviced regularly. It’s not a complicated job. At Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington we’ve been servicing differentials for 4.5 years. The used lubricating fluid is simply drained and then replaced. Some vehicles require specific additives in the differential fluid; your Wilmington service center will ensure you are getting what your sedans needs.

The intervals in time or mileage for servicing your differential vary greatly from vehicle to vehicle. Check with your owner’s manual or Atlantic Car Care to find out how often your sedans differential needs to be serviced.

Generally, however, front-wheel drive vehicles need their differential serviced more often than rear-wheel drive vehicles. Also, if you spend a lot of time off-road or on Wilmington area dirt or gravel roads, or if you drive through water, you will need to service your differential more often than the standard recommendation – check with your Honest Atlantic Car Care service specialist.

Preventive maintenance for your differential is good car care that can spare you pricey repair bills. Knowing what your differential is and how it operates is critical and will help you understand why this is good auto advice. Remember, take care of your sedans, and it will take care of you.

Why Used Cars Are More in Demand These Days

Used-Cars

by Ian Fuller

The Economy isn’t looking pretty – and it’s probably going to stay that way for a very long time, unless a miracle happens. This is just one of the many reasons why people are starting to find ways to minimize costs. Case in point: buying cars. Used cars are now in highly in demand because it is more affordable than a brand new car. Instead of shelling out a huge sum of money for a brand new car, you can opt for choosing a used car that is in great quality instead.

A used or “pre-loved” car is a great option if you’re looking for a good deal. These cars are highly affordable, and the best thing about it is that you can actually cut out a deal with the seller – unlike when you buy a brand new car, you would always pay for its actual selling price (which is very expensive). The writing on the wall is pretty obvious, but below are the main points why you’re better off going with a used car and why they are greatly in demand these days.

Affordability

It can’t be denied that a pre-owned car will cost much cheaper than a brand new one. With practicality and the tough economy in the mix, it’s just a wiser choice to go for the cheaper option. Cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean worse. It’s just a matter of finding a better deal for you which will allow you to save more money for other purposes.

Just as Good, If not Better!

When we talk about used vehicles, there’s a certain connotation that it may not be as good as a brand new one because of the mileage and the fact that it’s been used for quite some time already. That can be remedied though by finding a car that not only looks physically good, but also one with just average or above average mileage on it.
There are some cases where a used car, which is of a better model, is much better than a brand new car, with an inferior model. You can get a better model for a much cheaper price, than going for a brand new car (old model), which costs a fortune!

Accessibility and Practicality

There are a lot of people who are selling their pre-loved vehicles. You can see ads online, or even flyers on the streets, whether its a used car from JBA Kia or a Toyota Camry – basically, there’s never a shortage of used cars for sale. This means that you have easier access to it because you can schedule a visit or an ocular anytime you prefer. You can check which car fits you, and then you can cut out a deal with the seller.

Being practical is also the name of the game these days. Used cars are cheaper, which means it’s easier to apply for a loan to aid you in paying for it. Simply put – buying a used car is a more practical and wiser choice than investing on a brand new car.

The pros of choosing to buy a used car does not mean that you should never buy a brand new car – this just shows you that there is a more affordable and practical option open for you. These are the same reasons why used cars are more in demand these days. Everyone is starting to be smarter with their decisions.

Oil Change: Normal or Severe Driving?

Estimates vary as to when you need to have an oil change service on your vehicle. The intervals between each service rely on various factors. It seems like every person you ask has a different answer. Who is right? Knowing which factors affect the cleanliness of your oil can help you make an informed choice. A recent study by AAA found that more than 50% of all motorists follow the wrong maintenance schedule for their vehicles because they mistakenly assume they drive under "normal" conditions.

Recommended San Diego Service Intervals

Everyone in San Diego California knows we’re supposed to go to the dentist twice a year. We get our teeth cleaned and have a thorough dental inspection. Once a year, we get x-rays to look for problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye. When the dentist is done, he tells us what he’s found – “Everything’s fine, see you in six months.” Or “You’ve got a small cavity starting, let’s schedule an appointment to take care of it.” By the time you leave, you have a plan for addressing any necessary repairs.

This system works so much better than waiting for a painful problem before going into the dentist. Small problems are fixed before they turn into big problems. And you avoid those huge bills.

If we buy into this way of handling our dental care, why do we resist so much when facing the same system for our car care?

Following the manufacturer’s recommended intervals can be confusing. First there are recommendations for so many things: oil changes, transmission, coolant, air conditioning, power steering, brakes, fuel system, filters, belts, hoses, alignment, rotation, balancing …you get the point.

Every item has a recommended interval and it’s hard to keep it all straight – even if you’re part of the 1% of the population that reads your owners’ manual in San Diego California.

And if you have more than one car or Nissan Z, the complexity is multiplied. You’d need a computer to keep track of everything. Well, that’s how your San Diego service center does it. They subscribe to automotive databases that have your vehicle’s recommended intervals. You may have wondered how they know what else to recommend when you take your car in for an oil change – it’s all in the computer.

Well, it’s not all in the computer. There are other variables that can’t be accounted for in the schedule. Things like the weather conditions, altitude, and where and how you drive when you are out in our San Diego California area need to be taken into account. Talk about these things with your service advisor at Aero Auto Repair and you may decide that the severe service schedule in your owner’s manual is more appropriate.

Since anything that’s not highway driving in moderate weather is considered severe, most of us do at least some of that around San Diego California and it should be taken into consideration.

Let’s take your basic oil change as an example – what issues are involved? The oil you put in your car is a blend of base oil and special additives. There are detergents to clean the inside of your engine and corrosion inhibitors. A good quality motor oil will not only lubricate your engine, it will help it stay clean inside and run cooler.

Now, these additives deplete with use and time. That’s why most maintenance recommendations include both a time and mileage element – like 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.

It’s easy to think, “Gee, I’ve only driven 2,000 miles in the last 3 months. I can wait on that oil change.” But you need to remember that the inside of your engine is a harsh environment. The oil is contaminated with combustion by-products that starts degrading its effectiveness even when it’s just sitting there.

A lot of people in San Diego California don’t realize the harm that can be done by just skipping a single oil change. There are a lot of metal parts moving around in your engine. Small bits of metal wear off and are floating around in your oil. They can be carried to more delicate areas of the engine where they cause damage. Your oil filter is designed to trap metal particles and other dirt, but if it’s clogged up because you haven’t changed it, it can’t trap any more.

Oil sludge is another problem. Sludge is oil that has turned to a gunky jelly – think ‘Vaseline’. Obviously, sludge doesn’t lubricate. It can also clog small oil passages so that all the parts don’t get properly protected by the oil. That’ll lead to premature wear.

If you’ve missed some oil changes, don’t despair. Just talk with your service advisor at Aero Auto Repair. Fess up – you’ll feel better. And he can help you get back on track. Following recommended intervals is the key to keeping your car on the road and avoiding major repairs in San Diego California.

Boyd Expands Collision Auto Glass Repair and Body Repair Services in Florida with MRC Acquisition

The Boyd Group has finally completed its attainment of Master Collision Repair, a bodyworks and auto glass repair company in Florida.  The Boyd Group originally announced that it was in the process of adding Master Collision Repair to its assets in December 21 of last year, and the Group announced just this week that it had finished the entire acquisition process, immediately adding the new asset to its cash flow sources.  The announcement marks a significant expansion for Boyd’s auto repair services, especially given that it adds no fewer than 8 fresh facilities to its list of service centers in the United States.

The acquisition of the Florida-based auto glass repair and body repair works business was apparently completed for a price of anywhere between $11.5M and $12M.  The acting president as well as CEO of the Boyd Group, Brock Bulbuck, spoke of the new asset as an important one in that it was raising Boyd’s flag in the Florida area, where the company had yet to gain significant presence.  With the acquisition of MRC, that is now remedied.

The Boyd Group has been steady in its growth for the past few years, and has chosen, unlike another industry giant, Safelite AutoGlass, to focus specifically on collision repair instead of exclusively on auto glass repair.  The difference between the two specialisations is fairly clear to those in the trade: for reference, collision repair covers services for repairing or replacing materials or parts of the car that may have sustained damage one way or another, and this includes all parts of the car, from the windows to the tires; auto glass repair, on the other hand, focuses exclusively on damage that has been dealt to the glass parts of a vehicle, which typically means the windows and windshield but may also include, on occasion the headlamps, mirrors (side and rear), and the like.

Boyd started out in 1990 and has since grown to be one of the largest fleet operators in the US, and it runs several brands in both North America and Canada for collision repair.  Among these brands under the Group are Boyd Autobody and Glass, Gerber Collision & Glass, and Cars Collision Center.  Besides that, it now has the Master Collision Repair brand under its leadership.  As for Master Collision Repair, it was previously a family-owned company specializing in both auto glass repair and auto body repair.  The local business has had a history spanning at least four decades in the area, giving it a firm and established reputation with the residents.  It is also a BBB-accredited business, and one that started from a single family-run store in the Tampa Bay locale.

Car Tune Up: Protect Your Investment with a Tune Up!

To protect your automotive investment you need to establish and follow a maintenance plan.  Even with today’s modern vehicle’s, a tune up should be part of that plan to ensure you get the maximum reliability and safety from the vehicle you depend upon daily.  Check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, which will also include a scheduled car tune up. Although this schedule is based on "normal" driving, very few of us drive "normally."

I Have A Crack In My Windshield, Is It Safe To Drive?

WindshieldDamageRepairDenver3033220123

I got a crack in my windshield, is it safe to drive?

It’s happened to most drivers.  You’re driving down the highway when an airborne rock missile strikes your windshield, leaving a dreaded crack across your line of sight.  While many people attempt to drive with the crack or chip blocking their view, they may be unaware of the potential hazards associated with driving with the obstruction.

Impaired Vision

Depending on the location of the crack, the driver may not be able to see clearly.  Also, a crack in the windshield can cause a distorted image in the glass.  When driving, the operator of the vehicle should have access to the entire windshield in order to see their full surroundings.  Window damage can cause a blind spot in the driver’s visual field.  Since the driver’s reaction time is critical when operating a vehicle, having a blind spot can result in an accident.

Structural Weakness

Windshields are designed to stabilize the car’s roof by fitting tightly into place.  When cracked, it can actually compromise the integrity of the structure of the car.  Both the rear window and the windshield are vital to the car’s safety equipment.  A cracked windshield is more likely to buckle under the stress of the vehicle if it is involved in an accident.  This may result in the weight of the car crashing, causing the roof to cave in on the driver’s side.

Airbags

When airbags deploy, the force of the airbags may expand up toward the windshield.  If the airbag hits a damaged windshield, it may send dangerous shards of glass flying within the vehicle.  Most windshields have a shatter protection mechanism; however, when they have a crack or chip, this mechanism can fail to work.  The driver and all of the passengers within the vehicle may be seriously injured by the flying glass.

Restraint

Although seat belts are primarily the most important restraint device in a vehicle, when involved in a horrible accident, the windshield can also act as a restraint device.  A damaged windshield may not hold up under pressure and allow the driver to be ejected out of the vehicle.  Having a structurally sound windshield may save your life, as well as the lives of your passengers.

What should you do?

As soon as you notice an unpleasant chip or crack in your windshield, you should have it repaired immediately.  Chips are often easier and more affordable to repair than cracks, so catching it quickly may save you some money.  The cost of a car windshield repair is often covered by your insurance policy.  Check with your insurance company to find out if you have a deductible on windshield repairs.

Make sure that you have your windshield repaired by a professional.  Proper installation will ensure that your windshield will keep you and your passengers safe.  Not to mention that it simply looks better to have a brand new windshield, and not one that is chipped or cracked.

Next time your car is pelted with flying debris from the road, don’t lose your cool.  Simply take it to a professional auto body shop to have it replaced or repaired.  Being able to see all of your surroundings will ensure that you are driving safe while on the road.

Aero Auto Repair On Your Serpentine Belt

Today we’re going to be talking about serpentine belts for our San Diego California customers. Let’s start by talking about the accessories that are driven by the serpentine belt. First is the alternator. That’s the device that makes electricity to power the vehicle and recharge the battery. Then there’s the air conditioning compressor that makes cool air for you while you’re driving around San Diego California in the summer.

The power steering and power brake pumps are driven by the serpentine belt in most vehicles. Those pumps make the pressure that assists your steering and braking.

In many vehicles, the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt. The water pump is what circulates the coolant that protects your engine. In some cars around San Diego California, the water pump is driven by the timing belt.

The radiator cooling fans on some vehicles are also driven by the serpentine belt. Some have separate electric motors. That’s really a lot of work for one belt.

But modern engine design has a single belt that snakes around the front of the engine and drives most if not all of these accessories. Serpentine belts do a lot of work, but they’re tough and can last for thousands of miles.

Just how long will they last? That’ll vary for each individual car in the San Diego California area. Your manufacturer will have a recommendation for when it should be changed, but it could need it sooner. The good news is that a visual inspection can reveal a belt that’s getting close to failing.

Aero Auto Repair can look at the belt: if it has more than three or four cracks per inch it needs to be replaced. A deep crack that’s more than half the depth of the belt – replace. Frayed, missing pieces, a shiny glazed look? It’s out of there.

What’s involved in replacing the belt? First the old belt is removed. Then a new one is fitted around all the pulleys for the accessories and the drive. There’s a special pulley called a tensioner.

This pulley is mounted to the engine block with a spring loaded arm. Its job is to apply the correct amount of tension to the belt to keep it from getting loose and maybe slipping off. Because the spring in the tensioner pulley wears out, AutoNetTV recommends replacing them at the same time as the belt. It just makes sense.

What are the warning signs that there’s a problem with the serpentine belt? You may hear a squealing sound from under the hood when accelerating around our San Diego California streets. A loose belt might give you a slow, slapping sound.

What do you do if your belt breaks? If you’ve actually had that happen on our local San Diego California freeway, it can be a little scary. Often the first thing you notice is that you have no power steering or power brakes. Don’t panic – you can still steer and brake, but you’ll have to do the work. It’ll be harder to steer and you’ll need more time and effort to stop, so plan accordingly.

Your dashboard will light up will all kinds of warnings. You’ll see a warning about your cooling system if you have a water pump that’s driven by the serpentine belt. This is very critical because without your cooling system working, your engine will overheat. If you don’t stop you’ll have massive engine damage, maybe to the point that you need a new engine. Pull over as quickly as you safely can. Open your windows and turn the heater on full blast to provide a little engine cooling and pulled over as soon as possible.

The battery light will come on because the alternator isn’t working. If your car’s water pump isn’t driven by the serpentine belt, you’re not in danger of overheating so you can drive a little further if necessary. But the battery will run down to the point where the car won’t run and will just shut off. You don’t want that to happen while you’re driving in our local San Diego California traffic.

Remember, this does not have to happen if you replace your serpentine belt on schedule. Ask your technician at Aero Auto Repair to check your belts and hoses from time to time so you can take care of them if they need to be replaced prematurely.
