Lamborghini Museum Appears on Google Maps

Lamborghini Museum on Google MapsLamborghini is a top automaker that inspires future drivers as well as car enthusiasts. The prestigious brand is so popular that it has an extensive museum devoted to their most popular models. Fans may be unable to visit this beautiful structure located in Sant’ Agata Bolognese due to a variety of issues, including travel expenses, but there is now a better way to view every vehicle of this definitive collection. Google has completed an ambitious project that allows anyone to see these icons through their Google Maps service.

A Striking Museum

Opened in 2001, the Lamborghini Museum sits in a location that many refer to as motor valley. This area received the unique name because of the proximity of major companies such as Ferrari and Pagani. The brand was seeking a way to present their classic vehicles to a growing market of fans. Some models on display are one of a kind pieces or limited editions that are hard to find. The space encompasses over 4,000 square feet. An emphasis was placed on creating a location that brilliantly showcased these pieces in a way that other modern museums do for famous paintings. Guests can look over the classic cars as they sit among an open space. Lighting is designed to use outside sources such as sunlight to perfectly show off every angle. Striking wood floors counterbalance the modern construction that surrounds these super cars.

Choosing the right vehicles to highlight was an important consideration for the museum as it prepared to open; this continues even today. The important selection process saw choices such as the Sesto Elemento, Reventon, Countach, and Aventedor chosen for the exhibition. One of the most exciting selections of the group is the Lamborghini Reventon. It first debuted in 2007 to high praise. Only 21 of these vehicles were manufactured for the public and an additional model was produced just for display purposes. The Lamborghini Countach is another prominent piece in the collection. This model is often the first image that drivers have when the brand is mentioned. It stayed in production from the 1970s until the early 1990s.

Adding a Modern Way to View Collections

Bringing in the services of Google was important to the company. Google Maps features high-resolution images from around the world. Its comprehensive style is the perfect complement for this unrivaled display and photographers recorded the entire museum. This definitive process is time consuming but important when collecting the most thorough accurate data. Its results have been so impressive that other collections are now opening their doors to the company for future mapping opportunities. Look for other brands to begin appearing on Google Maps in the near future.

The name, Lamborghini is known around the word for its dedication to quality. Its history is made up of vehicles that are still considered some of the best models ever produced. With the help of Google, car enthusiasts can visit their favorites in the comfort of their own home or office. The no fee service shows off the entire collection in stunning photos that showcase every design element of both the unique structure and its contents.

2014 BMW i3 – Review

2014 BMW i3Over the years, BMW has manufactured a number of amazing vehicles and cemented its brand as one of the best in the automobile market. If you are looking for an economical and full of comfort city car or you live at a crowded place, 2014 BMW i3 having absolutely zero-emission is just the perfect car for you. Experts believe that this model would be a massive hit in crowded cities like Tokyo, Amsterdam, New York, London, etc.

Performance

2014 BMW i3’s drive is quite smooth and well-controlled; however, it is not that soft due to the stiffer sidewalls of the narrow and tall tires. In comparison with other electric cars in the market, the i3 offers an amazing driving experience with automatic transmission and regenerative braking, which allows one-pedal driving. On the road, the i3 is very crisp, with a tight turning circle of 32.3 feet and nimble handling. Despite the fact that it is ideally suited for driving in the city, the i3 runs quite well on the highway as well.

Speed

BMW i3 possesses a smooth continuous torque from takeoff, like most battery-cars. From 0 to 60 miles per hour, the 2014 i3 will accelerate in about 7 seconds. It takes 3.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 35 miles per hour. The top speed is 93 miles per hour, which is very good for a small electric car.

Price

It is priced at $41,350 in the US and £25,680 in the UK.

Economy

2014 BMW i3 is a remarkably efficient electric car when it runs on grid power, which it is expected to do for a lot more than half of its miles. The built-in charger is capable of up to 7.4 kilowatts, which is greater than some of its competitors like Nissan Leaf and some other electric cars, as they offer 6.6 kilowatts. The charger can charge 80 percent of the battery or more in less than four hours. On top of that, users can get their cars recharged from public charging stations as well.

Exterior

One has to admit that the exterior of 2014 BMW i3 is not quite up to the mark as the straight lines and curves at the rear looks a bit confusing. However, it is very elegant from the front three quarters and side views. A brilliant profile of the tall shape, the snub nose and the car’s wide stance offer a very solid look. When the car is shown with its front wheels cocked, the narrow tires can be a little disconcerting.

Interior

There are no question marks about the car’s interior though as it feels like a loft living room. Controlled through the iDrive knob on the console, the 10.2-inch display screen presents an amazing picture at the top surface of the dashboard. On top of that, there is a smaller screen behind the steering wheel. Interior panels are made of kenaf. All in all, the interior is simple but elegant.

Pros

  • Extremely smooth and powerful acceleration
  • Brilliant handling at low-speed
  • State of the art interior with all the modern functions

Cons

  • Lines on the body of the car appears to be an old design
  • The rear-seat access can be a touch awkward
  • Body roll, wheel hop not like traditional BMWs

Competitors

Some of the top competitors of 2014 BMW i3 are Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, Fiat 500E and Ford Focus Electric. However, the i3 possesses superior features for a city car and is expected to gain a lot of popularity with the passage of time.

Verdict

The 2014 BMW i3 is surely one of the best electric cars in the market, which is likely to pose a major threat to its competitors. I would give it 9 out of 10.

Boyd Expands Collision Auto Glass Repair and Body Repair Services in Florida with MRC Acquisition

The Boyd Group has finally completed its attainment of Master Collision Repair, a bodyworks and auto glass repair company in Florida.  The Boyd Group originally announced that it was in the process of adding Master Collision Repair to its assets in December 21 of last year, and the Group announced just this week that it had finished the entire acquisition process, immediately adding the new asset to its cash flow sources.  The announcement marks a significant expansion for Boyd’s auto repair services, especially given that it adds no fewer than 8 fresh facilities to its list of service centers in the United States.

The acquisition of the Florida-based auto glass repair and body repair works business was apparently completed for a price of anywhere between $11.5M and $12M.  The acting president as well as CEO of the Boyd Group, Brock Bulbuck, spoke of the new asset as an important one in that it was raising Boyd’s flag in the Florida area, where the company had yet to gain significant presence.  With the acquisition of MRC, that is now remedied.

The Boyd Group has been steady in its growth for the past few years, and has chosen, unlike another industry giant, Safelite AutoGlass, to focus specifically on collision repair instead of exclusively on auto glass repair.  The difference between the two specialisations is fairly clear to those in the trade: for reference, collision repair covers services for repairing or replacing materials or parts of the car that may have sustained damage one way or another, and this includes all parts of the car, from the windows to the tires; auto glass repair, on the other hand, focuses exclusively on damage that has been dealt to the glass parts of a vehicle, which typically means the windows and windshield but may also include, on occasion the headlamps, mirrors (side and rear), and the like.

Boyd started out in 1990 and has since grown to be one of the largest fleet operators in the US, and it runs several brands in both North America and Canada for collision repair.  Among these brands under the Group are Boyd Autobody and Glass, Gerber Collision & Glass, and Cars Collision Center.  Besides that, it now has the Master Collision Repair brand under its leadership.  As for Master Collision Repair, it was previously a family-owned company specializing in both auto glass repair and auto body repair.  The local business has had a history spanning at least four decades in the area, giving it a firm and established reputation with the residents.  It is also a BBB-accredited business, and one that started from a single family-run store in the Tampa Bay locale.

Ethics of Automotive Repair in Wilmington

We’re going to be talking about the ethics of automotive repair. It seems like news outlets really like hit-and-run reporting; they hit everyone from groceries stores to retail to physicians. And the Wilmington automotive service and repair industry hasn’t been given a pass either.

Unfortunately, every profession in Wilmington has some bad actors that hurt the reputation of everyone else. On the automotive side, industry associations and professional licensing organizations are very committed to high ethical standards.

Yet some people remain uncomfortable with Wilmington automotive service and repair. It may start with the fact that our vehicles are a big investment and we rely on them for so much in our lives. That alone guarantees our attention. And how well we understand the recommendations really impacts our comfort level.

If we understand what’s recommended and the benefits of taking care of the work – and the pitfalls of putting it off – we’ll have more trust in the recommendation. So communication is key. It’s like going to the doctor; If she’s using medical jargon and takes a lot of basic medical knowledge for granted, we have a hard time following her train of thought. It can be like that with your Wilmington service advisor too. He’s so familiar with all things automotive, he may forget you don’t know a PCV from an EGT.

If you don’t understand what your doctor’s talking about: ask some questions. If you don’t understand what your Wilmington automotive advisor’s talking about: ask some questions.

Let’s go back to those ethical standards; when we hear a repair recommendation, we always ask ourselves, “Is this really necessary?” Well, here’s the industry standard:

If a technician tells you that a repair or replacement is required it must meet the following criteria:

  1. The part no longer performs its intended purpose
  2. The part does not meet a design specification
  3. The part is missing

For example, it you take your car in for a grinding noise when you step on the brakes, you may just think you need new brake pads. After the inspection, the technician at Atlantic Car Care says that you have a cracked rotor and need to replace it.

If you tried to get him to simply put new pads on, he would say that if you didn’t want to replace the rotor; Atlantic Car Care would ethically have to refuse the repair.

To just put pads on a cracked rotor would have been very wrong. The brakes could’ve failed at anytime and needed to be repaired – not just have a band-aid slapped on them.

Now, looking at something not so serious, the technician may suggest repair or replacement if:

  1. The part is close to the end of its useful life – just above discard specifications or likely to fail soon
  2. To address a customer need or request – like for better ride or increased performance
  3. To comply with maintenance recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer
  4. Based on the technician’s informed experience

Of course, the technician has the burden of making ethical recommendations and properly educating their customers. For the customer, if you are uncomfortable with a recommendation, ask some questions. More information is always a good thing.

Driving Safety During The First Rains of the Season

Slick roads are only fun on a go-kart track…not on the freeway, right? When the first rains of the season hit the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas, it is important to be very careful while driving.

When the first rains of the season come along, the roads are super slick due to the oils deposited from the traffic. Naturally, when water drops hit the well-oiled roadways, there is a higher tendency for cars and trucks to slip and slide. At best case scenario, your vehicle hits a slick spot and hydroplanes for a second. In the worst cases, your vehicle loses traction altogether, sending your vehicle into a tailspin or fatal crash. To prevent these hazards, here are a few driving safety tips during the first rains of the season:

  • Exercise extreme caution.
  • Allow for more travel time.
  • Do not use cruise control.
  • Brake earlier, and don’t use too much force.
  • Avoid pooling water when possible.
  • Turn on your headlights and wipers at first sign of rain.
  • Be extra careful around pedestrians.
  • Give the vehicle in front of you plenty of space.
  • Defog your windows.
  • When hydroplaning, ease off the gas pedal and avoid braking suddenly or turning your steering wheel.
  • If you spin out, turn your wheels into the direction of the spin, but don’t over correct too much or you may end up losing control or flipping your vehicle.

We hope these driving safety tips are helpful to you. If you end up getting into an accident — minor or major — during the rainy season, we are here to assist you. Robert’s Auto Repair is a preferred vendor for many insurance companies, and we have the tools to get your vehicle fixed up again quickly.

Privacy Auto Glass on Cinderella’s New Carriage by Maybach

The luxury automotive manufacturer, Maybach, has just submitted its entry for the 2011 LA Auto Show Design Challenge, putting forth a recreation of the classic Berline carriage into an updated version of Cinderella’s enchanted pumpkin.  Among other things, the Maybach Berline is going to be fitted with oversized moulded auto glass panels for the gull-wing doors, a virtual chauffeur centre, and retractable stairs: Cinderella’s ideal fairytale experience, in other words.

The first thing that pops into your head when you see the Maybach Berline is simply awe.  The whole thing is gorgeous, and with the huge auto glass doors, looks like something that has popped straight out of a futuristic film.  This is in keeping with the theme of the contest: the LA Auto Show Design Challenge is basically a competition for various automakers to see which one can design the next “dream car” for Hollywood.

The Berline is in good standing in the competition.  Equipped with only the most luxurious amenities and provided with a teleoperation system that saves occupants of the car from having to deal with the (often intrusive) presence of a driver, the car is perfect for several dozen movie plots that are all takeoffs on the original Cinderella story.  Auto enthusiasts, especially those who loved the Mercedes-Benz GL Class, should also find another type of perfection in the car’s lines, as its futuristic look is not without references to some of the most popular cars of old.

The interiors are particularly attractive in the Maybach Berline.  One can practically envision all types of film sequences playing out in it due to the tête-à-tête positions of occupants—a return to the old horse-drawn carriages back in the day.

The Berline is going to be in stiff competition, though: also participating in the event are Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Hyundai, and Honda.  Mercedes-Benz, which collaborated with Maybach in the creation of the Berline, is actually putting forth two entries from two separate branches, one from N. America and Germany.  The former is going to be fielding the Mercedes Silver Arrow, the latter the Smart 341 Parkour.  Subaru is going to be submitting the Subaru Horizon, designed by its team in Tokyo.  Hyundai is submitting the Stratus Sprinter, a car conceptualised for a vampire movie, and Honda is submitting the Honda Intelligent Horse, a futuristic concept car with striking lines and unusual wheels.

The concept cars all feature some sort of tweak or new technology, whether it is in the type of auto glass used or the very functionalities of the vehicle.  The winner of the LA Auto Show Design Challenge this year is going to be announced on the 17th of this month, and car enthusiasts (as well as film-lovers) are already speculating heavily on which vehicle design shall take the prize.

Summer Time For Cars

We are getting to the hottest part of summer and there are a couple things that you need watch for with your vehicle.

You know to check our Air conditioning to make sure it is working properly. A couple other things that summer can have an effect on is your cooling system. Note if you see any coolant drips and check you coolant level regularly, especially in these hotter months your engine cooling system is very important.

Keep an eye on any warning lights on your dash and the temperature gauge if it appears to be getting into the red (hot) or if your car has a hot smell your vehicle is most likely overheating and you need to pull over and call someone. You don’t want to risk more costly repairs for your vehicle.

Check your tires year round to make sure they are in good condition, as well as checking your oil levels and making sure you keep up on getting your oil changed.

How to Know When to Change Your Oil At Atlantic Car Care

Today in the Atlantic Car Care auto care blog, we’re going to talk about oil change intervals. It seems that as engine technology advances, recommended oil change intervals have gotten longer for Atlantic Car Care customers. High quality oil in a well-engineered sedans engine has lead to extended intervals. But it’s also lead to some confusion among Wilmington car owners.

The old mantra “change your oil every three months or three thousand miles, whichever comes first” once applied to every vehicle on Wilmington expressways. Time and miles take their toll on motor oil. But now, you could have a different oil change recommendation for every car or truck you own.

Wilmington car owners are like everybody else, they have a tendency to follow the oil change schedule of the vehicle with the longest interval. Of course, that can lead to problems. How to Know When to Change Your Oil At Atlantic Car CareFor example, recently four of the world’s largest auto makers shortened the published intervals for several of their engine models. They originally published intervals that extended out to a much as 8,000 miles.

In real world Wilmington driving, the oil started to sludge up before the recommended change interval. Oil sludge is a thick jelly-like substance. Quite literally petroleum jelly – like Vaseline. This goop was clogging sedans small engine passages so the oil wouldn’t flow to some parts of the engine. This resulted in engine damage. We see it too often at Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington.

The auto makers began to offer an extended warranty to cover sludge damage. But there was a catch: the vehicle owner had to follow a new, lower service interval, and provide proof of oil changes in order to make a warranty claim.

So here’s the bottom line: with longer oil change intervals, it’s essential to follow them closely. Back in the day of 3 months or 3,000 miles, if you went an extra month or an extra thousand miles, your oil was still fresh enough that it didn’t have time to build up much sludge.

But if your recommended interval is 6,500 miles and you go over another thousand, you’re getting into heavy sludge territory. You absolutely need to follow mileage intervals very closely. And don’t forget your severe service schedule. If you do a lot of stop and go driving in North Carolina, short trips, drive in dusty or polluted Wilmington conditions, hot or cold weather, or haul heavy loads, you’re driving in severe service conditions. Your Atlantic Car Care advisor can help you determine which schedule to follow.

So check your sedans owner’s manual or talk with your Atlantic Car Care service advisor about where and how you drive in Wilmington. Should you change your oil closer to the regular schedule, or the severe service schedule? You need to make the call.

Let me give you an example of this. Some newer sedanss have an oil change indicator. It has a sophisticated computer algorithm that tracks number of cold starts, engine temperature, RPMs, mileage, and many more variables to come up with a recommendation for when to change the oil.

Depending on driving conditions, the indicator in one test vehicle came on at anywhere from 2,500 miles to almost 7,000 miles. It’s typically just over 4,000 miles. Clearer sometimes, we’re driving easy miles that are easy on the sedans – like a long road trip. Sometimes, we’re driving hard North Carolina miles – like towing a heavy trailer or a lot of around town driving. But, usually, it’s a combination of both.

Once again, it’s up to you to make the call as to when to change your oil at Atlantic Car Care to protect your sedans engine. Another place where North Carolina car owners can go wrong is with the type of oil they use. More and more new cars are coming to Wilmington owners filled with synthetic oil. Without going into a lot of detail right now, let’s just say that synthetic oil lasts longer and is very resistant to oil sludge.

But it also costs quite a bit more, so some Wilmington people are tempted to use conventional oil for their oil changes. Now, it’s always best to use the oil recommended by your manufacturer. Check your owner’s manual see if a conventional oil alternative is allowed.

But getting back to the problem, if your sedans came from the factory with synthetic oil, the recommended oil change interval is for synthetic oil. If you use conventional oil, you can’t use the synthetic interval. You need to shorten it.

Safelite’s Internal Auto Glass Repair and Replacement Technician Contest Scheduled for Feb 8

After nearly half a year of qualifying contests and division competitions, the auto glass company Safelite’s internal competition for identifying the best auto glass repair and replacement technicians in the company is coming to its national heat, with the country’s best technicians coming to New Orleans on the 8th of February to duke it out amongst each other.  The technicians shall be meeting in the River City Ballroom of Mardi Gras World, and the event shall be running from 8:00hrs to 17:00hrs of that day.

This competition has been going on for a while now, with the first event having taken place last year, on the 10th of September for the auto glass repair company’s Southern California division.  Two more competitions took place in that same month, one for the South Atlantic and one for the technicians of Ohio Valley, followed by four competitions in October for the Pacific Southwest, Northwest, Mid-South, and South, in order of occurrence.  November had only two division contests, with the Midwest and the Rockies heats being decided, and the one contest for December was the North Atlantic division heat.

Also called the Best of Belron Competition, this company event is going to see contestants being tested on various skills and competencies, being asked to perform a range of procedures that shall include windshield repair and windshield replacement in order to demonstrate their skill at their chosen profession.  The requirements are quite rigorous and evaluation is famously strict, with speed not even taking the front seat when it comes to the most important aspects of the procedure or repair required: quality, strict technical prowess, and even interaction with the consumer are all looked into first and foremost in the contest, in order to ascertain a truly outstanding, superior breed of auto glass repair technician.

The national heat that is going to be taking place this February is of particular import because it decides who gets to represent the country in the coming global heat of the competition.  There are going to be 32 countries participating in the event, so winning that round—the final one—would be a most prestigious honour indeed for any auto glass technician.  The need to ensure that the country is well-represented also factors in the tension surrounding the coming event, so both participants and judges are expected to be fairly amped up for the contest.

The auto glass repair technician who wins the national heat gets more than the chance to represent the country in Barcelona, Spain on the 22nd-24th of May for the global part of the contest: he is also going to be taking home a total of $10,000 in pocket money as an additional reward.

Differential Service in Wilmington North Carolina – What You Need To Know

Scratching your head? Don’t worry, if you don’t know what a differential is – you will in a moment. That fact is that if you drive a car anywhere in Wilmington, North Carolina, you have a differential. Whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, you have a differential. You might even have two or three.

Not surprisingly, a differential’s job is to compensate for differences. Specifically the differences in wheel speed when turning. For instance, imagine taking a corner near your Wilmington, North Carolina home. Your inside wheel has a shorter distance to travel than the outside wheel as you turn the corner. That means that your outside wheel has to turn faster to keep pace with the inside wheel.

The differential allows the wheels to turn at different speeds while still providing power to your vehicle. Without a differential, our tires would scrub and hop along the pavement during turns like the early cars.

Ever noticed the big bulge in the middle of the rear axle on trucks? That’s the differential. Rear-wheel drive vehicles have a differential in back. Most four-wheel drive trucks and SUVs will also have a similar differential on the front axle. Front-wheel drive vehicles’ differential is called a transaxle because it combines the differential and transmission in one unit. An all-wheel drive vehicle will have a differential or transfer case that adjusts for speed differences between the front and rear drive wheels.

It can seem a little complex to some Wilmington auto owners – but you can see that all of the engine’s power is routed through your differentials. They’re strong enough to handle the work, but- we’ve said it before – they need to be properly lubricated in order to stay strong. So from time to time, you need to have your differential serviced at Atlantic Car Care. The used fluid is drained and replaced with clean fluid. Some auto makers advise certain differentials to have special additives installed.

Get your differential serviced at our Wilmington automotive center:
Atlantic Car Care
21 New Bern Street
Wilmington, North Carolina 28403
9107941390

Recommendations for the time and mileage interval for servicing your differential, can vary greatly by vehicle. A front-wheel drive vehicle’s transaxle will need servicing more frequently than the rear differential on a pick-up truck, so check with your Wilmington, North Carolina Atlantic Car Care tech or your auto makers owner’s manual for recommendations.

How and where you drive in Wilmington will have an impact as well. If you drive on dirt roads or through streams around Wilmington, North Carolina, you’ll need to service the differential much sooner than if you always stay on highways.

Our Fuel-Cell Future

SOUTH WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT—Unlike sausage, it actually is a good idea to see pasta being made. I am wearing a chef’s apron, a hair net and a beard net, and I’m on the main floor of Carla’s Pasta. Started as a mom-and-pop business (well, mostly a “mom” business) in 1968, today it occupies 66,000 square feet, employs more than 150 people, and supplies 20,000 restaurants in New England alone with, among many other things, gnocchi, ravioli and pre-cooked pasta sheets.

You actually do want to see pasta being made! Here’s cheese ravioli on its way to a restaurant near you.
(Jim Motavalli photo)

Sergio Squatrito and his company’s $2 million investment:
A zero-emission fuel cell. (Jim Motavalli photo)

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen little green-and-white striped raviolis rolling down a conveyer belt, dropping into chilled water, then proceeding down the line to final bagging and boxing. Our tour was conducted by the genial Sergio Squatrito, vice president for operations and founder Carla’s son. He’s also a big supporter of Car Talk, a major supporter of renewable energy, offers vegan manicotti, and was extremely interested in my test car, a Chevy Volt. If he buys one, he’d park it next to his vintage ’69 Fiat 500.

Carla’s Pasta has just taken a big step—today, a solid percentage of its electricity comes from the 300-kilowatt fuel cell that sits on a concrete pad adjacent to the linguini works. Squatrito took us into the boiler room and showed us one of two big hot water/building heating units he was able to shut down because the natural gas-fired fuel cell has been on the job for the last month.

Fuel cells aren’t cheap, especially on the scale that can run commercial businesses. The 300-kw unit is relatively small, but it cost more than $2 million, which Carla’s paid for with a state development authority bridge loan and a $750,000 grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.

Fuel cells certainly aren’t new—they were invented in the mid-19th century, and Apollo moon missions took them into orbit. Essentially, they’re little chemical factories that turn hydrogen into electricity and water. You can use them in electric cars in place of a battery, and automakers have been building very expensive test cars for decades. But costs have plummeted as the technology has improved, and that’s why Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and Daimler are all promising to deliver commercial fuel-cell vehicles by 2015.

It may not look like it now, but fuel-cell cars could be a big deal. Tom Sullivan of Lumber Liquidators is trying to build a “hydrogen highway” on the east coast, and the California network is evolving (despite Arnold Schwarzenegger’s efforts being derailed by budget cuts). And now, in an interesting development, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which polices air quality in a challenged state, last week voted unanimously for a big ramp-up of its clean car program. The plan envisions 500,000 “zero emission” cars by 2025, a category that includes large numbers of fuel-cell vehicles as well as battery electrics. In one CARB scenario, there would be 163,300 fuel-cell cars in California by 2025. But will there be fueling stations (a cool $1-$2 million each) around the state when the cars start to roll out?

CARB thought of that, and added a provision that requires oil companies (from BP, Chevron and Shell to Exxon Mobil) to install hydrogen fueling at gas stations as certain levels of on-the-road fuel-cell vehicles are achieved. It’s a good thing, because right now Los Angeles has only two stations, and Daimler (for one) has cars stuck in parking lots waiting for a larger infrastructure. But the oil companies aren’t happy. At the CARB hearing, Cathy Reheis-Boyd, president of the Western States Petroleum Association trade group, threatened legal action over the provision. “We strongly oppose the clean fuels outlet requirement,” she said.

Daimler’s B-Class F-Cell hydrogen car: Piling up in Los Angeles. (Daimler photo)

Stationary cells have already developed into a strong market. I also visited FuelCellEnergy, which made the Carla’s Pasta unit, in nearby Torrington. It’s a full-scale manufacturing plant, with 500 employees, loading docks, a staff cafeteria, and signs boasting of accident-free work days—exactly the kind of thing that President Obama wants to see “in-sourced” in America and not exported abroad. FCE, in business since 1969 and in commercial production since 2003, now has 180 megawatts worth of fuel cells installed or in backlog. They’ve generated 900 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

One FCE plant in California is operated by Gil’s Onions, which sells the vegetable in fresh, pre-sliced form. This operation left a lot of outer skins as waste and because decomposing matter gives off methane, Gil’s was running into air-permitting problems in the state (which has the toughest regulations in the country).

FCE’s Kurt Goddard explained to me that fuel cells are a great zero-emission power solution for cities, because a) they don’t take up much space (even a big one needs only approximately a tennis court) or b) run afoul of any clean air laws. There’s one in downtown Los Angeles, where a nuke, a coal plant, or even a natural gas operation would not be welcome. They’re also incredibly quiet. I stood in the control room of the Carla’s Pasta cell and there wasn’t much more than a minor electronic hum. I was told by Chip Bottone, FCE’s CEO, “Clean, efficient and reliable fuel cell power generation offers our clients a cost-effective path to address their power needs and environmental stewardship simultaneously.” A two-fer, as it were.

Some of these plants are really, really big. FCE specializes in one megawatt units (with approximately the generating capacity of a large wind turbine), but some installations have multiple units and give power plants a run for their money. South Korea is a big supporter of fuel cells, and it recently put in an 11.2-megawatt unit, a record. Universities are big supporters of on-campus fuel cells, and the largest U.S. installation is an FCE cell that is part of a clean energy micro grid at the University of California, San Diego, and it’s 2.8 megawatts.

Goddard and John Sprainitis gave me a tour of FCE’s Torrington plant. There were a lot of workers rushing around on forklifts. In fact, it looked not unlike the pasta factory. My favorite room was final assembly, where a unit was approaching completion, with its enormous weatherproof cover hovering on a lift and waiting to be dropped in place.

Making hydrogen fuel cells in Connecticut, at FuelCellEnergy. (Jim Motavalli photo)

Yes, in many cases these plants (some of which are 30 feet high and weigh 120,000 pounds) are shipped, via truck, as complete units. But overseas locations such as South Korea often get fuel cells in kit form—I saw one boxed up for a steel mill, and it wouldn’t make economic sense to send a big steel structure to a steel mill.

Hydrogen is no longer a future fuel. The Oregon-based ClearEdge just announced a $500 million deal to sell 50 megawatts worth of fuel cell power plants to the Austrian company Güssing Renewable Energy GmbH by 2020. That’s foreign capital flowing into the United States from a clean energy investment. What’s not to like?

Here’s a video look at Carla’s Pasta and its brand-new fuel cell:
