How To Drive A Manual Transmission Effectively

There are many YouTube videos showing beginners how to drive a manual transmission. On the other end, you can take driving courses at the Skip Barber Driving School at Laguna Seca Raceway to drive a manual transmission like a pro. To help you drive a manual transmission in a way that is easy on your vehicle and gets you the best gas mileage, here are some tips for driving a stick.

1.  If you are new to standard transmissions and need to learn how to drive the car, here is a helpful video:

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/2Z21zzd2odE” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

2.  Now that you know how to drive your standard transmission vehicle, begin driving as you normally would in an automatic. Avoid tailgating the vehicle in front of you so you have plenty of time to stop.

3.  Shift a few hundred RPMs earlier than normal to save gas. By shifting early, you don’t wind the engine up so much.

4.  When you are at cruising speed, somewhere around 55 miles per hour, shift to the highest gear to achieve a higher top speed. When your engine is in a higher gear at lower RPMs, your vehicle will use gas more efficiently.

5.  Drive a little faster while going up hills so your vehicle can stay in the highest gear longer.

6.  If you really want to master the art of driving a stick, enroll in the Skip Barber Driving School. They teach everything from teen driving safety to high performance driving skills. For more information, visit their website at http://skipbarber.com/driving-programs/.

Whether you drive a manual or automatic transmission vehicle, we invite you to Robert’s Auto Repair for regular service and auto body repair. Contact Robert’s Auto Repair today at (831) 373-1534. We are conveniently located near Highway 1 & Del Monte Blvd. at 234 Ramona Avenue, Monterey, CA 93940. We look forward to serving you soon!

2013 Ford Escape Goes Green, Literally

KenafPlant_media
The eco-friendly gimmick war continues to rage on. On the heels of Chevrolet unveiling eco-impact labels on its new vehicles, Ford has announced that its new-for-2013 Escape will be made with plant material.

Ford is replacing some of the materials in the Escape’s doors with kenaf, a tropical plant related to cotton and okra. Kenaf is edible and looks like bamboo; it’s currently used in making cosmetics and paper products.

Ford says using the plant improves the vehicle’s fuel economy because it reduces the weight of the door bolsters by 25%. Its fuel economy gains weren’t specified, however. The automaker says kenaf will help save oil in other ways, too. Because the plant replaces oil-based materials previously used in Escape’s doors, “the use of kenaf is anticipated to offset 300,000 pounds of oil-based resin per year in North America,” Ford said in a press release.

When the redesigned compact SUV goes on sale this spring, kenaf will join Escape’s soy foam seats and head restraints, recycled-tire climate gauges and carpet made from plastic bottles.

Ford’s Escape certainly isn’t the first green vehicle. Land Rover’s new-for-2012 Range Rover Evoque, for example, is made with 35.2 pounds of recycled plastic, or about 1,000 16.9-ounce plastic bottles.

Summer Time For Cars

We are getting to the hottest part of summer and there are a couple things that you need watch for with your vehicle.

You know to check our Air conditioning to make sure it is working properly. A couple other things that summer can have an effect on is your cooling system. Note if you see any coolant drips and check you coolant level regularly, especially in these hotter months your engine cooling system is very important.

Keep an eye on any warning lights on your dash and the temperature gauge if it appears to be getting into the red (hot) or if your car has a hot smell your vehicle is most likely overheating and you need to pull over and call someone. You don’t want to risk more costly repairs for your vehicle.

Check your tires year round to make sure they are in good condition, as well as checking your oil levels and making sure you keep up on getting your oil changed.

Lexington Gets Spate of Auto Glass Vandalisms

Lexington is the latest place to be struck by the auto glass vandals.  According to police, no fewer than a dozen cars had their auto glass vandalized last week, all along a single drive.  The cars on Summerhill Drive suffered from broken windows and not windshields, further indicating the purely mischief-making nature of the prank.  People are suspecting that it is a single group that is responsible for the vandalism, considering that the incidents have all the indications of a series of vandalism caused by pranksters doing a malicious drive-by with a tool such as a pellet gun or a BB gun, two of the most favored instruments for vandals of car windows.

The auto glass vandalism are not new to this area, it seems.  At least one of the victims or owners of the vandalized cars, Nell Demaree, alleged that she had suffered a like vandalism before, after parking her car in the same location.  Residents of the area are troubled, fearing that the vandals shall continue to make the rounds of the location and make even more trouble for car owners.

Similar incidents have been breaking out all over the country and even abroad, although the vast majority of the auto glass break-ins this season have been ones suspected to be motivated by an intent to burgle.  The perpetrators do not always make off with something, of course, as some seem less discerning than others, but they do manage to steal something in most cases.  The usual items targeted are devices that are typically left in cars, such as GPS devices, sat nav units, and even mobile handsets forgotten by the owner in the seat of the car.  Other typical items that such car burglars look for would be packages from the mall, shopping bags, handbags, laptop bags, and similar items that may be left in any of the seats of the vehicle.  The usual recommendation in such cases is for car owners to simply take care not to leave anything tempting in their cars, and thus avoid presenting too much temptation to thieves.

The Lexington incidents, though, have not had any burglaries associated with them, which indicates pure vandalism at work.  This does not make it any less grave, of course: the owners of the cars still end up losing something, even if insurance does pay for the auto glass repair in most cases.  Still, the trouble of having to bring the car to the shop and wait for the broken window to be replaced is something to be considered.  Meanwhile, police are looking for clues and allege that although the incidents must have happened at any time from 1 to 5 in the morning, there should be some witnesses still.  Police urge any people with useful information to come forward and tell their story.

Atlantic Car Care: Why Replace Your Engine Air Filter?

Your browser does not support video

Just as our bodies need clean air to function properly, your sedans engine needs clean air to operate efficiently. Let’s go egghead for a minute. For every gallon of gas we burn driving on North Carolina expressways, twenty pounds of carbon dioxide comes out the tailpipe. Question: how can a gallon of gas that weighs a little over six pounds produce twenty pounds of carbon dioxide?

The answer is that the carbon comes from the gasoline, but the oxygen comes from the air. You see, it takes about twelve thousand gallons of air to burn a gallon of gas in your engine. Clearly, your sedans needs a lot of air to keep going in Heampstead. A lot of clean air is best.

Atlantic Car Care: Why Replace Your Engine Air Filter? You’ve seen the pictures of people in Japan wearing face masks. They want some kind of filter to keep unwanted pollution and germs out of their lungs. Well, your sedans also works better when its internals are clean. When your sedans air filter’s dirty, it simply can’t trap any more dirt, so the pollutants just pass through into your air intake system. From there it can clog your fuel injectors and even get into the motor itself. Not surprisingly, burning dust and pollen in your sedans engine does you no good.

So, we’re talking potential damage for Wilmington drivers. But another big thing is wasted fuel. Your sedans engine management computer tries to mix the correct amount of air in with the fuel. If the filter’s clogged, there isn’t enough air for the optimal fuel to air mix and that really messes with fuel efficiency.

In fact, replacing a dirty air filter at Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington can improve your fuel economy by up to ten percent. At today’s Heampstead fuel prices, you should be able to pay for a new air filter before your next oil change.

The verdict: When your sedans engine air filter needs to be replaced; it needs to be replaced. How often depends entirely on the level of air pollution where you drive in North Carolina. A simple visual inspection at Atlantic Car Care will tell you when you need a new engine air filter.

When you look at the air filter on your furnace at home and see it’s all clogged up with dust and dirt, you don’t hesitate to replace it. When your Atlantic Car Care service advisor shows you your nasty engine air filter, you now know why you should go ahead and replace it.

Owner Of Frank Myers Auto Wins Emmy Awards

Esperanza Poster

The owner of a Winston-Salem, NC used car dealership was recently honored to receive an Emmy® Award. Tracy Myers, owner of Frank Myers Auto Maxx, won the award for serving as Executive Producer of the inspirational short film documentary, “Esperanza.” Myers  owns several other businesses located in the Triad area including: WrestleCade Entertainment & America’s Most Liked Dealer Services.

“Esperanza” earned the Emmy® Awards for best historical/cultural documentary. Myers received an Emmy Award for his role as an Executive Producer of the film. He also served as Producer of the film, “Mi Casa Hogar,” which earned Nick Nanton an Emmy for Best Director. The Emmy® Ceremony was held on November 24, 2013 in Miami, Florida.

“Esperanza” is the inspirational story of how the Great American Pastime of Baseball led a young ball player to his life’s mission. While playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic in 1985, Dave Valle, a Seattle Mariner’s catcher, was swarmed by young children as most young fans would do. Dave soon realized, however, that an autograph was the last thing they wanted; they wanted food. They were starving, and they weren’t the only ones. The ballpark was surrounded by poverty stricken villages. After that eye opening experience Dave and his wife Vicky made a pact to return and make a difference. It was in that moment, Esperanza was born.

The film showcases Esperanza International – an organization that dedicates itself to free children and their families from poverty through initiatives that generate income, education and health, restoring self-worth and dignity to those who have lost hope. It reveals an in-depth look at Esperanza International’s incredible story and what can happen when people believe in an idea and act to make it come true.

“Mi Casa Hogar” reveals an in-depth look at the incredible story of the Casa Hogar children’s home in Acapulco, specifically how the home is providing a nurturing environment with a focus on education in this economically disadvantaged region. Casa Hogar is a children’s home that provides care, shelter, strength, love and hope in a Christian environment for orphaned and abandoned children in Acapulco, Mexico.

History Of Uncle Frank/Part 5 – The Astronaut

Frank Myers Nasa AstronautIn early 1961, Uncle Frank, always looking for the nicest, newest ride to offer his customers, managed to find a spot in the NASA astronaut program to see what all this space fuss was about. Few historians know that Uncle Frank was actually the first man in orbit, beating the Russians by a few weeks – after he climbed into the space capsule and “accidentally” hit the launch sequence.

The U.S. government hushed the whole thing up and Uncle Frank went back to his dealership. He knew he wouldn’t be selling any spacecraft in his lifetime because (a) used rockets weren’t very reliable and (b) the sticker price was, shall we say, astronomical.

About Uncle Frank

Uncle Frank has lived many lives and has many stories to share. He currently resides in Winston Salem, NC where he spends his days as the Frank Myers Auto Maxx Mascot.

Be sure to read History of Uncle Frank/Part 4 – Uncle Frank The Singing Star and check back for future editions later.

* Uncle Frank Sez: “All content in The History Of Uncle Frank is a mixture of parody, poor satire, and/or (very) lame humor. It is for entertainment purposes only.”

Boyd Expands Collision Auto Glass Repair and Body Repair Services in Florida with MRC Acquisition

The Boyd Group has finally completed its attainment of Master Collision Repair, a bodyworks and auto glass repair company in Florida.  The Boyd Group originally announced that it was in the process of adding Master Collision Repair to its assets in December 21 of last year, and the Group announced just this week that it had finished the entire acquisition process, immediately adding the new asset to its cash flow sources.  The announcement marks a significant expansion for Boyd’s auto repair services, especially given that it adds no fewer than 8 fresh facilities to its list of service centers in the United States.

The acquisition of the Florida-based auto glass repair and body repair works business was apparently completed for a price of anywhere between $11.5M and $12M.  The acting president as well as CEO of the Boyd Group, Brock Bulbuck, spoke of the new asset as an important one in that it was raising Boyd’s flag in the Florida area, where the company had yet to gain significant presence.  With the acquisition of MRC, that is now remedied.

The Boyd Group has been steady in its growth for the past few years, and has chosen, unlike another industry giant, Safelite AutoGlass, to focus specifically on collision repair instead of exclusively on auto glass repair.  The difference between the two specialisations is fairly clear to those in the trade: for reference, collision repair covers services for repairing or replacing materials or parts of the car that may have sustained damage one way or another, and this includes all parts of the car, from the windows to the tires; auto glass repair, on the other hand, focuses exclusively on damage that has been dealt to the glass parts of a vehicle, which typically means the windows and windshield but may also include, on occasion the headlamps, mirrors (side and rear), and the like.

Boyd started out in 1990 and has since grown to be one of the largest fleet operators in the US, and it runs several brands in both North America and Canada for collision repair.  Among these brands under the Group are Boyd Autobody and Glass, Gerber Collision & Glass, and Cars Collision Center.  Besides that, it now has the Master Collision Repair brand under its leadership.  As for Master Collision Repair, it was previously a family-owned company specializing in both auto glass repair and auto body repair.  The local business has had a history spanning at least four decades in the area, giving it a firm and established reputation with the residents.  It is also a BBB-accredited business, and one that started from a single family-run store in the Tampa Bay locale.

Road Trip Games For Kids

Road trips are big adventures for kids, and they can create unforgettable memories. To make a road trip remain pleasurable for the duration of the trip, here are some road trip games for kids that will keep them entertained and occupied while you travel:

“I Spy” is a road trip game that has withstood the test of time. “I spy with my little eye, something red.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.

“Road Trip Bingo” is a fun road trip game that requires a little planning ahead of time, but can be a terrific scavenger hunt. All you need are clipboards, bingo cards, and a bag of pennies. The bingo cards will list various things that may be seen on the road trip. As the gamers see the things listed on their bingo cards, they cover each item with a penny until the winner covers all the squares and shouts out “Bingo”.

“License Plate Game” is an easy game where the goal is to spot license plates from all 50 states. To play, write down all the states you see during the road trip. Keep track of Canadian, European, and Mexican license plates, too.

“Tic Tac Toe” is a classic road trip game. All you need are two players, a pencil, and a pad of paper to play this popular standby. Player One places an X on the grid, Player Two plots an O. They continue to take turns until one player has three across.

“Hangman” is another game that’s perfect for kids. The first player thinks of a person, place, movie or book title—it could be anything, really. Instead of writing out the saying, she leaves an underscore for each letter in each word. The second player guesses one letter at a time. If the mystery saying contains the letter, it is written in the correct place. If not, the first player draws a head on the hangman scaffold. When enough incorrect letters have been guessed, the dead body is complete and the second player loses. If the guesser solves the puzzle before the body is complete, he wins.

“The Alphabet Game” is a fun game for kids that can read road signs. Starting with “A”, look for road signs that begin with the letter until you get to “Z”. This game works best when played on long road trips.

If you are planning a road trip with the kids, Robert’s Auto Repair is available to make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and safe. To schedule your pre-road trip safety inspection, contact Robert’s Auto Repair at (831) 373-1534. We are conveniently located near Highway 1 and Del Monte Blvd. at 234 Ramona Avenue, Monterey, CA 93940. We look forward to serving you soon!

How to Protect Auto Glass and Avoid a Windshield Replacement in Winter

Winter is a tough time, not just for the farming folk but also for urban dwellers, what with the many problems it brings for cars.  Winter usually sees businesses in vehicle repair, such as auto glass repair businesses and car repair shops, getting an abrupt increase in the number of customers for windshield replacement jobs and front-end restoration after a gruesome run-in with the elements.  There are some protective measures you can take, though, especially where your windshield is concerned.  Following the steps described below can help you avoid that costly windshield replacement.

The first step to avoiding windshield replacement is putting your car in a safe place.  Obviously, a garage is the best place for parking your car in winter—or just about any time of year—but if that is not available, you should at least try to park it up your driveway or at a location where it is unlikely to have a run-in with some overzealous wielder of the snow thrower.  The snow thrower is a major culprit when it comes to cracked windshields, so try to put your car out of harm’s way.  The same goes for tall bushes, areas where snow tends to pile up, and trees: make sure your car is not parked in a location where the snow accumulated in these areas might fall on it and crack your windshield due to the sudden weight.

Another option for keeping your car protected is to look for a tarp cover for it.  There are car covers and windshield covers being sold on the market that just make use of easy-to-handle straps.  You can set these over your car’s auto glass and keep the frost from getting to it that way.  There is a caveat, though: if you are expecting serious snowfall, you should probably go with another preventative option.  This is because if enough snow piles up on the cover, it might be another headache to have to deal with, given that its heft shall make it difficult to remove.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to prevent nasty cracks from snow leading to windshield replacement work is to use frost-preventing solutions.  There are actually quite a number of these on the market now, and some of them even need only be applied about once a month or so for your car’s auto glass to naturally repel (think “easy to slide off” instead of “bouncing off” here) H2O.  The downside to this is that it can get quite costly, as these are not exactly cheap.  Still, if you factor in the fact that the price of a windshield replacement nowadays can go from $300 to $1000 for luxury vehicles, a $15 or $20 bottle of anti-ice formula hardly seems that costly.

Means Testing And Credit Counseling In Bankruptcy Proceedings

Means Testing And Credit Counseling In Bankruptcy Proceedings

Are you contemplating filing for bankruptcy in the state of Arizona? Then try to think a few essential things over first. Filing for bankruptcy shouldn’t be done haphazardly. It’s something that requires serious thought and planning as well. Usually, a person who is suffering severe and almost irreversible financial difficulties is one who should properly contemplate bankruptcy proceedings. But if you still have enough assets to cover your debts, then there may still be other better options for you to consider. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you should talk things out with a licensed bankruptcy lawyer in the state before actually going for it.

An experienced bankruptcy lawyer in Arizona will most likely require you to first undergo the means test and mandatory credit counseling before he will consider filing your bankruptcy petition. Why is this so? Stemming from the 2005 Reform Laws, these requirements were incorporated to the United States Bankruptcy Code in order to prevent abuses on the system. In the past, filing for bankruptcy was resorted to by more than just a few individuals to just frivolously avoid their financial obligations. This opened the doors to abuse which is why these tests were introduced as amendments to the existing legislation.

Essentially, the means test is for the purpose of evaluating the present income of the person as well as his remaining assets, assuming any are still left. The result of such assessment will determine whether he can file for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 or if he has no choice but to pursue a Chapter 13 bankruptcy instead. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy can only be filed if after undergoing the means test, the individual is found to be with very minimal to no assets left to cover his outstanding debts to his creditors. Your current income will also be calculated and reviewed accordingly to see if it can still be sufficient enough to meet your outstanding financial obligations.

As for the mandatory credit counseling, this lays down several crucial requirements for you to fulfill before you can file your petition. By the very term “mandatory,” failure to meet such requirements would lead to the dismissal of your petition by the bankruptcy courts. These requirements include:

  • Meeting with an approved credit counselor for a 90-minute session within 6 months before filing your bankruptcy petition;
  • Completing money management classes before your debts will be discharged; and
  • Developing a debt repayment schedule in case you’re filing under Chapter 13

Failure to undergo the means test or to fulfill any of the requirements for mandatory credit counseling will most likely lead the courts to dismiss your petition and at times, with prejudice as well. Thus, you have to be very prudent and discuss your bankruptcy plans thoroughly with a bankruptcy attorney in Arizona to make sure that you’re literally doing the right thing. Consult with your bankruptcy attorney today and put your financial burdens to rest for good.

Automatic Auto Glass Cleaning Robot Now Sold in the UK

Do you hate having to wash the windshield or car windows regularly but want a perfect shine each time you go out for a drive?  Well, you can apparently leave the job in capable hands now: robot hands, to be precise.  An automatic auto glass cleaning device has just been released for sale in the UK recently, with orders already stacking up for the handy gadget every finicky car owner—or housekeeper would love to have.

The item is called Windoro, and it is being marketed as the first automatic cleaning robot for pane glass or windows.  It was actually released last year in Germany, and won high acclaim there, being one of the stars of the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, also known as the IFA at the time.  In fact, it sold over a thousand units there, and immediately showed that it had great marketing potential.

Now, consumers from Ireland and the UK can order the item from the manufacturer’s website.  If you are wondering how this robot works, it is actually quite simple, yet at the same time ingenuous.  The Windoro unit, instead of being operated by some sort of pulley system that drags it across the glass after being set up in a complex rig over the area to be cleaned, simplifies the matter of working on the glass surface by attaching to it in itself.  The attachment is actually through magnetism.

If you were to use this item to clean your auto glass, you would have to take the two parts of the device—they look like robot or metal versions of the two bread halves of a sandwich—and set them on opposite sides of the same piece or pane of glass.  Hence, if you are trying to get it to clean your windshield, you would place one half on the glass from the interior and the other facing it on the exterior.  The two clamp together by means of the attraction produced by the Neodymium-type magnets in their bodies.  The brilliant part of this is that you can prevent your auto glass from being damaged by modifying the strength of the magnets.

The device has LED lights that help the user figure out how high or low to set magnet intensity, as they flash red when it needs to go down and yellow when it needs to go up.  It can only work on auto glass that is within the 5 to 25 mm range in its thickness, but this fits the bill for your typical auto glass measurement anyway, so car owners should not worry about the device being incompatible with their windshields.  While UK and Ireland consumers are already welcoming the item on the market, US consumers shall undoubtedly be the same once the gadget hits shores stateside.

Important Features of an Off-Road Vehicle

Are you interested in some off-road capabilities for your next car? If so, you may want to swing by Toyota FJ Cruiser dealerships. This is a car that gives you all of the off-road aspects that you are looking for, such as a four wheel drive system, great ground clearance, and the like. If you want to go on trails or even climb the side of a mountain, this is exactly what you need.

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Even if you are not planning to take to the trails, it might not be a bad idea to get a car that can do it. Think about driving in the winter, when you can hit a lot of snow. What do you need the most? You have to have two things: ground clearance and four wheel drive. If you do, you can punch through the snow and be safe. This is nice whether you are driving to work or going on the back roads. The same things that help you on the trails can help you when the roads get tough and the weather is out of control.

Every high-quality off-road vehicle possesses an extremely efficient engine that can produce an optimum level of horsepower and torque. A strong engine helps the vehicle perform well in testing circumstances like mountainous environments. An good off-road car should have the potential to climb a terrain at a 60 percent angle and the ability to move across a terrain sideways without tilting over even if the slope is at an angle of 40 percent.

Another thing that an off-road vehicle may have is a set of skid plates. These are designed to help keep the car from being damaged if you are going over rocks or logs. In the winter, they keep the snow away from the engine, preventing rust. The plates protect the engine, so they heat up quickly, meaning you do not even have to worry about snow getting packed under them.

Some of the modern off-road cars come with an electronic parking brake which makes sure that the vehicle does not slip on slopes. A rollover sensing system is another modern technology that warns the driver about the dangers of tipping over.

It needs to be remembered that off-road vehicles are built with higher ground clearance and they have a higher center of gravity as a result. This means that there is always a greater chance of rolling over as compared to other vehicles, which is the reason why a rollover sensing system is an extremely important addition to this type of vehicles.

However, a number of cars that perform exceptionally off the road are not that great when it comes to on-road driving and they fail to compete against other vehicles. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you go through the features, pros and cons of a car before opting for it.

Let us go through a few qualities of a good off-road car and it is advised that you consider them before purchasing such a vehicle:

  • Large tires with deep open treads
  • A flexible suspension of the highest quality
  • A powerful engine that has the potential to generate a high level of torque and horsepower
  • Enough cargo space
  • Lighter, agile and fuel efficient
  • Efficient brakes that prevent any kind of slipping
  • A rollover sensing system

You can search for off-road vehicles before choosing one.

Recommended Service Intervals At Atlantic Car Care

Most people in the Wilmington area are aware that automotive manufacturers have recommended service intervals. Following recommended service intervals is very important. The engineers that design our vehicles have tested the various systems and components to meet durability and safety standards. Some of these standards are self-imposed and others, like those for emissions components, are government mandated for the areas around Heampstead, Burgaw and Leland in North Carolina.

The maintenance schedules are designed to achieve the standards. Think of the benefits of following recommended intervals as falling into three general categories: Protection, Efficiency and Safety.

Protection. Let’s start with motor oil. First of all, the engineers recommend a particular weight and type of motor oil for your sedans. All of their oil change recommendations assume using the proper motor oil. Motor oil contains detergents and other additives that clean the engine and provide corrosion resistance. Over time, the additives are depleted. The oil also becomes contaminated by water, dirt and combustion gases.

Extending your interval beyond the recommendation means that your sedans engine will be operating without the full protection of fresh motor oil. It also means that sludge can form in contaminated oil and clog up passages in the engine, starving parts from needed lubrication.

Efficiency. Some services are designed to keep automotive systems operating efficiently. For example, the fuel system gets clogged up with gum and varnish from the fuel. Fuel doesn’t flow efficiently which reduces fuel economy. A fuel system cleaning restores the fuel system’s efficiency and increases your gas mileage.

Safety. Your brakes are obviously one of the most important safety systems on your sedans. The manufacturer has scheduled brake pad replacement as well as power brake fluid drain and replacement intervals. Because brakes are so important, a brake inspection is also on the schedule to head off problems before they result in an accident.

Check your owner’s manual for recommended service schedules or talk with your Wilmington service advisor at Atlantic Car Care by calling 9107941390. You’ll find our shop located at 21 New Bern Street in Wilmington, North Carolina 28403.

You may be surprised to learn that various inspections may be on your list of factory recommendations for your sedans. These inspections are usually at major intervals like fifteen or thirty thousand miles. They’re designed to uncover important parts that may be close to failing.

Your sedans owner’s manual can tell you when to change your oil, but it can’t tell you that you have a radiator hose that’s bulging and about to burst. For that you need a trained auto technician. These scheduled inspections are in addition to the multi-point inspections done with a full-service oil change.

Oil Change Interval: What is Right?

Has your engine survived the harsh winter months in good shape? It may be time for a little spring cleaning! If you want to keep your car performing at its best, be sure to have a quality oil change at the appropriate interval. Don't let the junk accumulate in your motor. A wise driver knows:

• that regular oil changes are vital to the longevity of the motor;
• how often they should have an oil change service; and
• what could happen if oil changes are neglected.

Gun Used to Break Auto Glass in Utah New Year’s Eve Rescue

New Year’s Eve turned from a fun holiday to a harrowing night for a Utah family on the way to Beaver Mountain when an accident caused their car to slide into the chilly Logan River.  Apparently, Roger Andersen was driving with his two children, both under ten years of age, and a friend when he lost control of the car in a section of Highway 89 known for its high accident occurrence.  The car fell into the river and while the adults were able to get out of the car subsequently, the two children were apparently stuck inside, with the auto glass windows blocking their egress and their seatbelts strapping them where they were.

Fortunately for the family, the locals passing by the area were quick to help.  One particular trio, composed of a former policeman named Chris Willden, was instrumental to the rescue of the pair of trapped children.  Willden and his companions, his father as well as his son, immediately jumped to action upon seeing the state of the family and the vehicle, and freed the children from their cage by shattering the auto glass of the rear window with his pistol.

According to Willden, it was necessary to take that measure because there was no other way of accessing the two children inside the rapidly flooding car.  Although he and his father—along with the adults with whom the children were travelling—first attempted to open the car doors to extricate the trapped pair, they found that the doors were locked.  The problem was aggravated by the rising water in the car, which could well have caused hypothermia for the two children had they been permitted to stay longer where they were.  Thinking quickly, the former police officer aimed his pistol downward—to ensure that the bullet would eject without hurting the two persons in the car—and at the window of the vehicle, breaking the tempered auto glass and thus gaining access to the inside of the vehicle.

There Willden managed to cut loose the two children from their seatbelts and extracted them from the flooding vehicle.  The unfortunate family in the accident was taken to nearby hospitals soon after, and were pronounced to be in fair condition only recently.  While the two children actually started out in the ICU of the children’s hospital to which they were brought, their status was deemed to be vastly improved after medical care was given to them to stave off the possibility of shock or hypothermia.  Local authorities are already crediting the quick and efficient rescue of the family to the dozen people who helped, most especially to Chris Willden, for his quick actions in breaking the auto glass to free the pair from the vehicle.

Traveling With Pets In The Car

Sometimes it’s tough to leave your furry friends at home while you head out for a road trip. After all, our pets are part of our family and we enjoy their company when we travel. Here are some ideas for safe and comfortable travel with your pets.

Dogs:

Depending on your dog, it may be best to travel with a crate, especially if they like to run around the car. Crating will keep your dog safe. In addition, the driver will not have as many distractions when a dog is crated. Keep a small bowl of water inside the crate so your dog can stay hydrated.

Some dogs are calmer and will be happy to lie down in the back seat. To keep your car cleaner, place a dog blanket in the back seat area to reduce the amount of dirt and dog hair getting into your seats. If you place a small bowl of water on the blanket, it will catch any spilled water and keep your seats dry.

Cats:

Most cats prefer to be crated while in the car. Like dogs, crating keeps your cat safe and reduces the number of distractions for the driver. Make sure to place a small bowl of water inside the crate so your feline can take a drink when needed.

Birds and Exotics:

Place your birds or exotic pets in a cage that can easily be restrained so it does not get jostled around. Make sure to have water available to your pets, as well as some food and toys.

All Four Legged Pets:

Put together a travel kit for your pets, which include the following:

  • Leash

  • Food

  • Water

  • Blanket

  • Crate (optional)

  • Chew toys

  • Brush

  • Nail clippers

  • Small first aid kit

Give your four legged friends frequent food, water, and potty breaks. Major freeways often have rest areas that also include pet bathroom areas. Stretching the legs is a good way to burn off excess energy, but make sure your pet is on a leash and cannot escape.

Always park your vehicle in the shade to help your pet stay cool. If it is not raining, it is a good idea to crack the windows for fresh air. Remember that your vehicle can get as hot as an oven on hot days, so never leave your pet in a hot car for over 2 minutes. Always have drinking water available in an open bowl when your pet is in a parked car.

If you are planning a road trip with your pets, Robert’s Auto Repair is available to make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and safe.

2014 BMW i3 – Review

2014 BMW i3Over the years, BMW has manufactured a number of amazing vehicles and cemented its brand as one of the best in the automobile market. If you are looking for an economical and full of comfort city car or you live at a crowded place, 2014 BMW i3 having absolutely zero-emission is just the perfect car for you. Experts believe that this model would be a massive hit in crowded cities like Tokyo, Amsterdam, New York, London, etc.

Performance

2014 BMW i3’s drive is quite smooth and well-controlled; however, it is not that soft due to the stiffer sidewalls of the narrow and tall tires. In comparison with other electric cars in the market, the i3 offers an amazing driving experience with automatic transmission and regenerative braking, which allows one-pedal driving. On the road, the i3 is very crisp, with a tight turning circle of 32.3 feet and nimble handling. Despite the fact that it is ideally suited for driving in the city, the i3 runs quite well on the highway as well.

Speed

BMW i3 possesses a smooth continuous torque from takeoff, like most battery-cars. From 0 to 60 miles per hour, the 2014 i3 will accelerate in about 7 seconds. It takes 3.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 35 miles per hour. The top speed is 93 miles per hour, which is very good for a small electric car.

Price

It is priced at $41,350 in the US and £25,680 in the UK.

Economy

2014 BMW i3 is a remarkably efficient electric car when it runs on grid power, which it is expected to do for a lot more than half of its miles. The built-in charger is capable of up to 7.4 kilowatts, which is greater than some of its competitors like Nissan Leaf and some other electric cars, as they offer 6.6 kilowatts. The charger can charge 80 percent of the battery or more in less than four hours. On top of that, users can get their cars recharged from public charging stations as well.

Exterior

One has to admit that the exterior of 2014 BMW i3 is not quite up to the mark as the straight lines and curves at the rear looks a bit confusing. However, it is very elegant from the front three quarters and side views. A brilliant profile of the tall shape, the snub nose and the car’s wide stance offer a very solid look. When the car is shown with its front wheels cocked, the narrow tires can be a little disconcerting.

Interior

There are no question marks about the car’s interior though as it feels like a loft living room. Controlled through the iDrive knob on the console, the 10.2-inch display screen presents an amazing picture at the top surface of the dashboard. On top of that, there is a smaller screen behind the steering wheel. Interior panels are made of kenaf. All in all, the interior is simple but elegant.

Pros

  • Extremely smooth and powerful acceleration
  • Brilliant handling at low-speed
  • State of the art interior with all the modern functions

Cons

  • Lines on the body of the car appears to be an old design
  • The rear-seat access can be a touch awkward
  • Body roll, wheel hop not like traditional BMWs

Competitors

Some of the top competitors of 2014 BMW i3 are Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, Fiat 500E and Ford Focus Electric. However, the i3 possesses superior features for a city car and is expected to gain a lot of popularity with the passage of time.

Verdict

The 2014 BMW i3 is surely one of the best electric cars in the market, which is likely to pose a major threat to its competitors. I would give it 9 out of 10.

Car Service Tips for the Electrical System

A vehicle's electrical system is more intricate than ever before, even though it is basically the same design as 30 years ago. This is a major problem that offers a challenge to vehicle owners. Problems associated with the driving operability are caused by variations in voltage due to the use of computerized controls. Even the smallest change in voltage can alter the controls in an electrical system. If regular car service is neglected, car problems can start from poor electrical connections due to lose connections and the buildup of corrosion around the battery posts. A good quality car repair requires the use of a higher level of technology than just a decade ago.

Safelite’s Internal Auto Glass Repair and Replacement Technician Contest Scheduled for Feb 8

After nearly half a year of qualifying contests and division competitions, the auto glass company Safelite’s internal competition for identifying the best auto glass repair and replacement technicians in the company is coming to its national heat, with the country’s best technicians coming to New Orleans on the 8th of February to duke it out amongst each other.  The technicians shall be meeting in the River City Ballroom of Mardi Gras World, and the event shall be running from 8:00hrs to 17:00hrs of that day.

This competition has been going on for a while now, with the first event having taken place last year, on the 10th of September for the auto glass repair company’s Southern California division.  Two more competitions took place in that same month, one for the South Atlantic and one for the technicians of Ohio Valley, followed by four competitions in October for the Pacific Southwest, Northwest, Mid-South, and South, in order of occurrence.  November had only two division contests, with the Midwest and the Rockies heats being decided, and the one contest for December was the North Atlantic division heat.

Also called the Best of Belron Competition, this company event is going to see contestants being tested on various skills and competencies, being asked to perform a range of procedures that shall include windshield repair and windshield replacement in order to demonstrate their skill at their chosen profession.  The requirements are quite rigorous and evaluation is famously strict, with speed not even taking the front seat when it comes to the most important aspects of the procedure or repair required: quality, strict technical prowess, and even interaction with the consumer are all looked into first and foremost in the contest, in order to ascertain a truly outstanding, superior breed of auto glass repair technician.

The national heat that is going to be taking place this February is of particular import because it decides who gets to represent the country in the coming global heat of the competition.  There are going to be 32 countries participating in the event, so winning that round—the final one—would be a most prestigious honour indeed for any auto glass technician.  The need to ensure that the country is well-represented also factors in the tension surrounding the coming event, so both participants and judges are expected to be fairly amped up for the contest.

The auto glass repair technician who wins the national heat gets more than the chance to represent the country in Barcelona, Spain on the 22nd-24th of May for the global part of the contest: he is also going to be taking home a total of $10,000 in pocket money as an additional reward.
