Top 10 Ugly Cars – Do you agree?

By Cars.com Staff, Cars.com

Designing a car is no easy business. It’s a process that takes years and is often split between studios located across the globe — conceptualizing, modeling, wind-tunneling, focus-grouping. When the final product arrives at your local auto mall, it’s been vetted more times than a presidential candidate.

After all that, it baffles us that an auto industry spending billions in product development could still turn out ugly cars. We’re not talking bland, designed-by-committee machines that leave you forgetting they exist. We’re talking rolling eyesores or comic relief on the drive home — cars whose owners you can only hope won them on a game show from hell.

We offer our picks for the top 10 ugly cars from the U.S. market over the past 30 years. We retired the Pontiac Aztek, an SUV even onetime GM product chief Bob Lutz admitted had an “unbridled homeliness.” Don’t get us wrong: The Aztek is ghastly. But it always makes these lists, and we wanted to give others a chance to shine. We are equal-opportunity offenders, after all.

Toyota Tercel wagon, 1983-87

Boxy hatchbacks aren’t inherently ugly, but when you add in odd angles and a rearmost window that looks like it dropped out of a Lego kit, things start to go wrong. It goes completely wrong when you circle around back and realize some joker has slapped an ATM on the back of your car.

Ford Mustang SVO, 1984-86

How do you take an automotive icon and make it ugly? Hire a designer from Ford, circa 1984. That’s when the automaker issued a performance variant of the Mustang called SVO. Already burdened with the econo-hatchback design of other Mustangs, it added a two-tiered spoiler and uniquely awful grille. The hood scoop looked like an aftermarket add-on.

Ford Probe, 1989-92

This may be the only car on the list owned by a Cars.com staffer. “My ’89 Probe was a pale brown called Mocha, so that alone could have influenced it falling on an ugly list,” says Managing Editor David Thomas. Latte hue or no, the Probe’s angular design and beefy proportions were not a good combination.

Chevrolet Lumina APV, 1990-93

Perhaps Chevrolet thought it was grabbing the future with its wedge-shaped Lumina APV, but all it proved was it could make a minivan look like a giant DustBuster. When we reflect on this injustice against families, we’re not saddened that GM is out of the minivan biz.

Ford Taurus, 1996-99

Rounded corners came into vogue in 1990s automotive design, but Ford went too far. Replacing the sensible ’95 Taurus with oval madness left all the aesthetics of a beanbag chair. One reviewer found more than six dozen elliptical shapes, from headlights to the amoeba-shaped dash insert for the stereo and climate controls.

Subaru B9 Tribeca, 2006-07

Subaru gutted it out for two model years before succumbing to its senses and overhauling the B9 Tribeca’s front, but two years of that appalling grille were two too many. We wish we could go back to a time when we hadn’t seen the B9 Tribeca.

BMW 5 Series GT, 2010-present

The 5 Series GT makes us long for the days when BMW had a proper midsize wagon in its lineup for folks who wanted a little more utility. You might think the sacrifices the GT makes in cargo versatility would lead to better looks, but the opposite is true. Why, BMW? Why?

Honda Accord Crosstour, 2010-present

Honda had to quell an internet backlash when the Crosstour debuted on Facebook. With its oversized grille and robotic headlights, the wagon suggests an automotive equivalent to the “before” photo in a rhinoplasty ad. Worst of all? You’d think the bean-shaped proportions would yield good utility, but the Crosstour has less room than most rivals.

Lincoln MKT, 2010-present

Is it a whale? Is it a piano? We prefer to think of it as what happens when a bunch of designers play a game of, “No, I can draw an uglier line than you.” Not to mention that it looks like their paper became folded, resulting in that god-awful rear-window line.

Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, 2011-present

An all-wheel-drive convertible with reasonable ground clearance is good in theory. But the CrossCabriolet adapts the concept to the Murano SUV’s cluttered face, lops off two doors and squeezes the rest from a piece of Silly Putty. Leave the top up and the bloated tail joins two rear windows, neither of which offers much driving visibility.

San Diego Air Conditioning Service

Working up a sweat is a great thing to do in a gym around San Diego, but not in your car. When your car’s AC System has a problem, you’ll often feel it right away. The question is, how long do you put up with it? You know, the old comfort versus cost dilemma. But a more comfortable drive around San Diego has a lot of benefits, and keeping the AC System well maintained can help prevent expensive repairs.

A common cause for AC failure is water and air in the system. The system does not work as well with air in it. And water can cause rust that leads to damage of the A/C components. Also refrigerant, the stuff that makes the air cold, can leak out, reducing the efficiency of the system, making it work harder to try to cool the air. That is why periodically evacuating the air conditioning system and recharging it keeps the proper amount of clean refrigerant in the system so it cools better and lasts longer.

You should also run the air conditioner regularly, even in the winter, so that it lubricates itself and keeps the seals from drying out. The seals can crack and that leads to leaks. Your owner’s manual will have recommendations for how often to service your air conditioner. Some service centers also have this information as part of their computer databases. Your service advisor at Aero Auto Repair can give you more information.

Of course, if your AC currently isn’t working right, then now is the time to get it checked. Many service centers such as Aero Auto Repair can inspect and test your air conditioning and offer evacuation and recharge services. This goes a long way to avoiding having to bring your air conditioner in for major repairs.

Recent environmental laws have stopped the manufacture of Freon, a refrigerant that was common in cars made before 1993. There is a very limited supply of Freon so the price is very steep. It may not be worth its weight in gold, but it probably is worth its weight in silver. If you have an older vehicle that uses Freon, you may want to consider having it retrofitted to use the new EPA-approved R134a refrigerant. It will pay for itself in the long run.

Thinking About Changing The Color Of Your Car Paint?

color match expert

It’s a common occurrence that an someone finds the perfect car, but can’t seem to find the right color paint to make it just what they wants.  At this point, many car owners will simply choose to change the paint, and start researching the auto painting process.  The first thing they often notice is that the process of applying new car paint is not something that should be done by just anybody.  In fact, in order to get a high quality job, it’s recommended that you have a reputable auto body shop with expertise in car paint and color matching to perform the color change for you.  Even finding a place big enough to paint a car can be difficult for the average car owner, while an auto body shop offers all the tools, equipment, dust free paint booth and space to provide a professional paint job to any car.  Grand Sport Auto Body offers professionally trained and certified painters. Be sure to stop in for your FREE estimate. Below are the basic steps of a car painting process.

Sanding

The first step in the painting process is sanding the car and removing the old paint.  A successful paint job requires dedication and the willingness to complete hard work.  Many amateur painters are so anxious about getting new paint on a car that they may not give the sanding process the time it needs to ensure that the car paint sticks well to the surface and appears smooth.  During the sanding process, it’s important to look and feel for imperfections in the surface that can be worn down.  This is something that an experienced professional would know.

Taping

Once the sanding is done, it’s time to tape or mask the parts of the car where you don’t want to apply new paint.  This includes windows, mirrors, and any glass on the car.  Special tape that is designed for this process should be used when painting a car, as regular masking tape may damage the finish on the car.

Safety

When painting a car a different color, chemicals are involved that can be harmful to the body if they are inhaled.  It’s essential to the safety of the painter and all those in the auto body shop that the right safety equipment is used when painting a car.  Some examples of safety equipment that is typically used when painting a car are:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Painter suit
  • Eye goggles
  • Respirator

Although damages from not using the correct safety procedures may not immediately be obvious, the long-term effects can be incredibly harmful to your health.  This can be bad for an inexperienced painter.

Priming

The priming process is another one that is extremely important, but the importance is often overlooked in the anxiousness to get the job done.  Primer should be applied directly over the bare metal of the car.  Any scratches or dings may be covered and filled in with epoxy during this process.  It is usually recommended that two coats of primer be applied before the actual paint is applied to the car.  If any imperfections are noticed after the primer is applied, a professional may choose to step back to the sanding process before the paint is applied.

Painting

Once the car is primed and ready to go, it is now time to choose the final color for your new paint job.  If the color has already been chosen, then the painting process can begin.  Paint is typically applied to a car with a professional spray gun, and using the gun is something that needs to be practiced before the first job is attempted.  Some professionals recommend spraying the car with an empty paint gun before applying the paint to get a feel for the gun.  The art of applying a perfect coat of paint with a paint gun is something that comes with many hours of practice.

The process of changing the top layer of paint on a car is not something that should be done in a short amount of time, or in the wrong place.  Applying paint to a car is similar to an art, and must be given the proper time and attention in order to ensure that the car’s new paint job looks like it came that way.  If you are considering getting a new paint job, it’s highly suggested you call a professional if you aren’t confident in doing it yourself with the proper tools needed.

History Of Uncle Frank/Part 2 – Uncle Frank The Frontiersman

 Uncle Frank The Frontiersman

This photo captures famed horse trader Uncle Frank Myers in 1887, somewhere on the trail in West Texas. As you can see, he’s showing off one of the prime vehicles from his lot – an early Ford Bronco, gently used, in excellent condition, and, as with all of Frank’s quality vehicles, complete with a lifetime warranty (“lifetime” meaning the life of the horse).

Uncle Frank became a fixture on the local horse trading scene, believing that every cowboy (and cowgirl) deserved a nicer, newer steed. He was known throughout the Wild West for his unforgettable catchphrase, “Everybody saddles up!”

About Uncle Frank

Uncle Frank has lived many lives and has many stories to share. He currently resides in Winston Salem, NC where he spends his days as the Frank Myers Auto Maxx Mascot.

Be sure to read History of Uncle Frank/Part 1 – Uncle Frank The Pioneer and check back for future editions later.

Frank Myers Auto Warns Consumers Of Flood Cars In North Carolina

www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK47URPnNOo

Around 230,000 vehicles were damaged by Hurricane Sandy’s rain and flood waters in late October. Now the National Dealers Association has warned car dealerships that some of those vehicles have been re-conditioned in order to be sold in other states, including North Carolina.

Tracy Myers, owner of Frank Myers Auto Maxx in Winston Salem, said he won’t be buying any water-damaged Sandy cars.

“If we get that car we’re not going to sell it. We advise any consumer to never buy a flood car,” Myers said.

If you’re in the market, Myers said there are some things you need to check out on a car to make sure it’s not water-damaged.

For the car’s interior, water lines are often hard to get rid of, and may still be visible even with repeated washing.

In the trunk, detailers often miss the spare tire well, which can become rusted if a heavy amount of water is in the trunk.

Under the hood, untreated bolts and screws will also show rust, despite a dealer’s best efforts. All of these examples should be red flags, Myers said.

Then there are the things you can’t see.

Robert Thomas, Director of Service at Frank Myers Auto Maxx, said water can damage the car’s on-board computer, which can cause the diagnostic system to malfunction.

“It’s impossible to completely dry a car’s electrical components if it’s been submerged,” Thomas said.

Myers advised all buyers to get a complete vehicle history report, which would disclose if a car had ever been flooded. “All reputable car dealerships will give consumers a complete vehicle history report, such as Auto Check from Experian, for free.”

Failing to disclose damage to a vehicle is a misdemeanor in North Carolina, and it can also leave someone convicted of the offense open to civil action.

Make Your Battery Last

Today’s report from Aero Auto Repair is on car batteries, why they die and what we can do to lengthen their life. Most of us have had a dead battery at one time or another. In fact, it would be very unusual if you hadn’t. You may be surprised to learn that only 30 percent of San Diego vehicle batteries last for 48 months.

Now that’s an average. How long a battery lasts depends on many factors. You may not know that one of the biggest factors is the temperature where you live and drive around San Diego. You might suppose that cold weather was harder on batteries because it takes more power to crank a cold engine, but the opposite is actually true.

For more information on your battery, please visit us:
Aero Auto Repair
9756 Aero Drive
San Diego, California 92123
858-309-4274

Batteries in very cold climates have a life expectancy of 51 months as opposed to 30 months in very warm climates. The reason is simple: batteries are chemically more active when they’re hot than when they’re cold.

A car battery will actually start to discharge on its own within 24 hours in hot weather. It takes several days in cold weather. When batteries are left too long in a state of partial discharge, the discharged portion of the battery plates actually, for the lack of a better word, ‘die’. Recharging the battery will not restore the dead part of the battery plate.

One of the big problems for the way most of us drive in the San Diego area, is that our batteries are often partially discharged. The biggest job the battery does is to start the car. It takes some time for the alternator to recharge the battery after starting. If you’re driving short distances, especially if there are several starts and stops, your battery may not fully recharge.

Another issue is that vehicles are coming equipped with more and more electricity hungry accessories like navigation systems, DVD players, CD and MP3 players, heated seats, heated steering wheels and so on. And we often plug in cell phones, computers and other gadgets. Combine that with short trips and it’s no wonder that our batteries are partially discharged.

Experts say we can extend our battery life by topping off the charge periodically using a good quality battery charger. You may’ve heard these chargers referred to as ‘trickle chargers’. They’re attached to the battery and plugged into a wall outlet to slowly bring the battery up to full charge.

Now there’s some science involved with how fast a battery should be recharged. If you buy a cheap manual charger, you’ll have to tend it. Frankly a learning curve on how to do it right and requires much attention. A computer controlled charger – or smart charger – monitors the process and determines the appropriate rate of charge. And it even stops charging when it’s fully charged. It costs more than the manual charger, but the automatic model is worth it.

The suggestion is to charge once a month in warm weather and once every three months in cold weather.

Another thing to avoid is deeply discharging your battery. Something like running the headlights and stereo with the engine turned off. That’ll take months off the battery life every time you do it.

Now, as we discussed, heat is hard on a battery. A dirty, greasy battery holds more heat. You can wipe off excess dirt with a paper towel or ask your service advisor at Aero Auto Repair to clean it for you. Aero Auto Repair can even test your battery and tell you if it’s time to replace it.

Batteries are fairly expensive, so taking a few steps to make them last longer is well worth it. Of course, the battery will eventually need to be replaced. Always make sure you get a new battery that meets the factory specifications for your vehicle. If you feel you need more battery capacity than what came with your vehicle, talk with your service advisor at Aero Auto Repair about appropriate upgrades.

If you have a dead battery, be careful to inspect it before you jump start it. If the case is bulging, cracked or leaking, do not jump start it. Damaged batteries can explode or catch fire. And deeply discharged batteries can freeze. Do not jump start a frozen battery.

Cleaning Your Car In 9 Steps

Breathe in. Breathe out. Ahhhhh!!! You smell that? YES, you’re right. It’s springtime!

A season of renewal, sunshine, fun and, dare I say it—CLEANLINESS! As much fun as it’s not, this is the time of the year to get your clean on and take care of some much needed spring cleaning! So set aside an afternoon to transform your stuff from messy to tidy—and please don’t forget to include your car.

Dirty cars, trucks, vans and SUV’s need love too!

Ask yourself these questions:

1) Are you a little embarrassed when a friend jumps into the passenger seat of your car?

2) Moms, do you hang your head low in car line?

3) What about on Friday night? Does your date step back in horror as he or she sits down in the passengers side?

4) Do you know what that strange odor is coming from underneath the seats? You know the one that’s an odd mixture of month old chicken nuggets and sweaty gym socks.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, now is the perfect time to do something about the state of your car.

So I’m here to help! Follow my guidelines to get your car back in shape for spring . . . for the sake of your friendships . . . for your sanity in car line . . . and especially for that “hot” date you’d like to go on next weekend (even if its with your spouse).

Think about how much better you’ll feel behind the wheel of your clean ride. Say goodbye to dirt and hello to a fun springtime in your clean and shiny car!

SPRING CAR CLEANING GUIDE:

1. Wash—Wash your vehicle using a mild soap and water. Then dry with a soft, clean chamois (or lint free towel). Don’t allow bird poop, bugs, and tree sap to damage your paint. Remove them as soon as you can because the eating away of your paint happens fast, especially with the stronger sun of spring baking down on your paint. Use a soft brush to clean wheels and NEVER use chemicals with an acid base. If your wheels are dirty, clean those first.

2. Polish & Wax—Your vehicle deserves and needs a fresh coat of wax on your car for spring. The wax serves as a protective barrier against the insects, bird droppings and tree sap that’s plentiful this time of year. And that you just spent hours cleaning off. In addition to that, wax keeps your car looking nice and shiny.

3. Replace Filters—Have your auto service center of choice (like Frank Myers Auto Maxx…HINT! HINT!) inspect your cabin air filters and engine air filters. Replace all filters if necessary. During spring these filters can become heavy with pollen, which negatively effects how your car runs.

4. Clean Screen—Clear the screen where the hood and windshield meet, directly under the wipers. Also clear out crevices in this area. You have to make sure and keep these areas free of leaves and miscellaneous debris so that they won’t absorb water, which causes rust, and which can cause sediment that will clog the evaporator drain. If you don’t, you could be facing very expensive auto repairs and no one wants those.

5. Pressure Check—Make sure your tires are set to the proper pressure because as temperatures get higher, air expands, so you may have to let air out of your tires. If you need assistance with this, Frank Myers Auto Maxx can check your tire pressure for free.

6. Interior Detail—Pull out your car mats. Vacuum carpet. Wipe down interior. Throw away garbage. Organize your trunk. If your carpet is stained, they can be cleaned at most professional auto detail centers.

7. Window Clean—Clean all the windows and mirrors (inside and out). Use a solution of ¼ cup household ammonia to 1-quart water. Apply solution with a sponge and dry with newspaper, paper towels or a soft cloth…but newspaper works best.

8. Clean Your Blades—Gently lift the blades, and wipe both sides with a soft cloth or paper towel soaked in a solution of ¼ cup household ammonia to 1-quart cold water. Dry the blades with a cloth and lower them back into place.

9. Shine Your Lights—Apply window cleaner to your headlights. Rub vigorously. If your headlights have become milky, they may need some additional TLC by a professional.

If you’ve followed steps 1 to 9 to get your car clean then you deserve a break! So take that shiny ride out to dinner. Bring a friend along. You wouldn’t want all that work to go unnoticed!!!

Happy clean trails to you! Until we meet again.

Means Testing And Credit Counseling In Bankruptcy Proceedings

Means Testing And Credit Counseling In Bankruptcy Proceedings

Are you contemplating filing for bankruptcy in the state of Arizona? Then try to think a few essential things over first. Filing for bankruptcy shouldn’t be done haphazardly. It’s something that requires serious thought and planning as well. Usually, a person who is suffering severe and almost irreversible financial difficulties is one who should properly contemplate bankruptcy proceedings. But if you still have enough assets to cover your debts, then there may still be other better options for you to consider. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you should talk things out with a licensed bankruptcy lawyer in the state before actually going for it.

An experienced bankruptcy lawyer in Arizona will most likely require you to first undergo the means test and mandatory credit counseling before he will consider filing your bankruptcy petition. Why is this so? Stemming from the 2005 Reform Laws, these requirements were incorporated to the United States Bankruptcy Code in order to prevent abuses on the system. In the past, filing for bankruptcy was resorted to by more than just a few individuals to just frivolously avoid their financial obligations. This opened the doors to abuse which is why these tests were introduced as amendments to the existing legislation.

Essentially, the means test is for the purpose of evaluating the present income of the person as well as his remaining assets, assuming any are still left. The result of such assessment will determine whether he can file for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 or if he has no choice but to pursue a Chapter 13 bankruptcy instead. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy can only be filed if after undergoing the means test, the individual is found to be with very minimal to no assets left to cover his outstanding debts to his creditors. Your current income will also be calculated and reviewed accordingly to see if it can still be sufficient enough to meet your outstanding financial obligations.

As for the mandatory credit counseling, this lays down several crucial requirements for you to fulfill before you can file your petition. By the very term “mandatory,” failure to meet such requirements would lead to the dismissal of your petition by the bankruptcy courts. These requirements include:

  • Meeting with an approved credit counselor for a 90-minute session within 6 months before filing your bankruptcy petition;
  • Completing money management classes before your debts will be discharged; and
  • Developing a debt repayment schedule in case you’re filing under Chapter 13

Failure to undergo the means test or to fulfill any of the requirements for mandatory credit counseling will most likely lead the courts to dismiss your petition and at times, with prejudice as well. Thus, you have to be very prudent and discuss your bankruptcy plans thoroughly with a bankruptcy attorney in Arizona to make sure that you’re literally doing the right thing. Consult with your bankruptcy attorney today and put your financial burdens to rest for good.

Power Steering Service At Atlantic Car Care In Wilmington

Many Wilmington drivers have been hearing about technological advances in power steering, specifically, electric power steering. Some very high-end cars have been featuring electric power steering for a few years now. An electric motor directly provides the power assist to make steering easier. Undoubtedly we’ll see much more of this in Wilmington as full electric cars and electric hybrids become more common.

The vast majority of cars and trucks serviced at Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington use a hydraulic power boost system. With hydraulics, fluid is pressurized by a pump which actuates a hydraulic cylinder to reduce steering effort. Some of these pumps are powered by an electric motor. Most pumps are powered by the serpentine belt driven by the engine.

Power Steering Service At Atlantic Car Care In WilmingtonPower steering fluid has the necessary hydraulic properties and the ability to lubricate the internal parts. The power steering fluid also protects sedans components from rust and corrosion.

Wilmington car owners should be aware that manufacturers recommend that the fluid be replaced on schedule.
At Atlantic Car Care, the old fluid is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly. Fresh fluid is then installed.

Unfortunately, many Wilmington drivers don’t realize how critical it is to service their power steering, and some may not even know that it’s necessary in the first place. A neglected power steering system can develop leaks that will shorten the life of the pump.

Wilmington drivers should be aware of warnings that indicate possible power steering problems: the need to constantly add power steering fluid, a loud whining from the pump, erratic power assist or high steering effort. If you’re experiencing any of these problems, have your power steering checked out at Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington.

In addition to the pump and hydraulic system, there are mechanical parts in the steering system. The rods, arms, joints and knuckles that actually turn the wheels can become worn or damaged. A standard alignment service at Wilmington includes an inspection of steering components.

If you notice any play in the steering wheel, that the steering wheel is off center, or a noise coming from your front wheels, especially when turning, have your Atlantic Car Care advisor do an inspection so the problem can be corrected. Waiting too long could cause uneven tire wear and may even lead to steering failure. Call Atlantic Car Care today at 9107941390.

The Importance Of Wilmington Drivers Following Service Intervals

Your browser does not support video

Today in our Atlantic Car Care blog, we’re going to talk about following recommended service intervals. Your sedans isn’t the only aspect of your life in Wilmington with recommended intervals: Let’s start with twice yearly dental check-ups and regular physical exams. How about laundry, watering the lawn and paying the bills?

Now, what would happen if you didn’t follow these intervals? Well, you’d get more cavities. You’d may not discover health conditions that could be more effectively treated with early detection. And you’d have to wear dirty clothes, be embarrassed by your brown lawn and have your utilities shut off.

The Importance Of Wilmington Drivers Following Service IntervalsClearly, there are some things in life that we have to take care of regularly. If we don’t, there are negative consequences. Our quality of life in Wilmington takes a hit and it inevitably costs more money.

So why is it so hard to remember to follow regular preventive maintenance on our sedanss? Probably a couple of reasons. One is that automotive maintenance items just don’t seem that urgent. All our Wilmington neighbors can see our dead lawn, but no one knows how dirty our transmission fluid is. It’s easy to put off. The other reason is that we’re just not as familiar with automotive maintenance, so it’s a bit intimidating.

From a practical standpoint, Wilmington people don’t need to memorize their sedans owner’s manuals. You can let your Atlantic Car Care advisor remind you of the guidelines established by vehicle manufacturers: he has checklists of what the manufacturer recommends and can find potential problems when he inspects your sedans. You really can rely on Atlantic Car Care professionals to help you make good automotive decisions.

For Wilmington drivers who want to be more proactive with their sedans care, here are some simple ways for Wilmington car owners to remember what has a maintenance interval.

First: Fluids. If it’s liquid, it’s got a replacement schedule. Oil, transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid, etc.

Then think tires. They need air, rotation, balancing, and alignment. And while you’re thinking tires, don’t forget brakes and shock absorbers.

And what makes your sedans go? Air and fuel. Air filter replacement, fuel filters and fuel system cleaning. Of course there are more items, but if Wilmington car owners remember to take their car or truck in to Atlantic Car Care for these things, their service advisor will help them with the rest.

And if you don’t follow recommended service intervals? You get lousy fuel economy, your sedans doesn’t run as well, your safety is compromised and you’ll spend more money in the long run. So it’s the same as everything else: The quality of your motoring life takes a hit and it ends up costing you more.

Reason enough for me to follow recommended service intervals.

Subaru, Mazda Rise, Ford Crashes, in Consumer Reports’ Automaker Report Card

Park a spot on the “Automaker Report Card”. Much like school report cards, automobile manufacturers get one based on consumer opinion. The list is being published in “Consumer Reports” magazine. Highlighting the latest automaker rankings in best and worst used cars and used car reliability for cars manufactured from 2006-2012. Where did your favorite automaker make it on this list?

(Overall score out of 100)

1.    Subaru (75)
2.    Mazda (74)
3.    Toyota (73)
4.    Honda (72)
5.    Nissan (67)
6.    Volvo (64)
7.    Hyundai (63)
8.    BMW (63)
9.    Volkswagen (62)
10.  Ford (60)
11.  Mercedes-Benz (58)
12.  General Motors (56)
13.  Chrysler (51)

Subaru in the first place spot, holding this spot for the first time with only six models out.  All of the most popular Japanese brand cars take the top 5 spots, with Mazda making significant improvement moving from seventh the last time the report has ran all the way to second place. Kudos Mazda!  Honda was in first place now falls to third place, mainly for the poor reviews on the redesigned Civic and Odyssey models. Unfortunately, General Motors and Chrysler remain on the bad side of the report, despite Chrysler’s reliability improvement to “average”.

Summer Time For Cars

We are getting to the hottest part of summer and there are a couple things that you need watch for with your vehicle.

You know to check our Air conditioning to make sure it is working properly. A couple other things that summer can have an effect on is your cooling system. Note if you see any coolant drips and check you coolant level regularly, especially in these hotter months your engine cooling system is very important.

Keep an eye on any warning lights on your dash and the temperature gauge if it appears to be getting into the red (hot) or if your car has a hot smell your vehicle is most likely overheating and you need to pull over and call someone. You don’t want to risk more costly repairs for your vehicle.

Check your tires year round to make sure they are in good condition, as well as checking your oil levels and making sure you keep up on getting your oil changed.

Need an Engine Rebuild? What are your choices?

If your vehicle has finally bit the dust and the motor is totally shot, don't just go out and buy a new car and take on the burden of a car payment. You have a few choices of engine service before you do that. Buying a new car might sound great in theory but in these uncertain economic times, it might not be the right investment. Other options, such as an engine rebuild or replacement may be a much better economic decision to keep new car costs at bay.

S. California Auto Glass Repair Shop Offers Discount for Services During Holiday Season

A South California auto glass repair shop, PG Auto Glass, has just announced that it is going to be making available a discount to customers this holiday season in order to ease the financial burden that most people go through during this time.  As pockets are emptied by Christmas gift expenses, holiday party costs and the like, people do end up being a little lighter in the pocketbook than they were before Christmastime, which PG Auto Glass representatives say may have negative results on the necessary maintenance work people need to do to keep their vehicles in tip-top shape.  Hence, the company is offering a 10% discount on its services this season, in the true spirit of giving.

The auto glass repair shop’s discount can be seen on its website, where a coupon has been put up by the company for customers interested in taking advantage of the promo.  This is actually quite a good idea, not just for the customers but also for the company.  Recent forays by many windshield repair and replacement stores in coupon as well as groupon promotions indicate that consumers are more enthusiastic than ever about taking on coupon discount schemes.  Experts say this is most likely because of the recession affecting people’s perceptions as well as their pockets, where consumers are becoming more and more sensitive to discount possibilities and are quicker to respond to discount offerings from companies because of the clear potential to save money that way.

As such, a lot of companies in the auto glass repair and replacement industry—as well as other industries, as a matter of fact—have been putting up coupons and groupons of late, trying to entice customers.  For the most part, it seems to be successful, according to the reports of most of the companies trying it out.  PG Auto Glass’s 10% discount scheme shall be likely to see good rewards for the company, especially as the new year comes ever closer.

A new year’s approach might seem unrelated at first to the question of whether or not an auto glass repair company’s bid to draw in customers with a discount on services can work, but it may actually be closely linked to it.  One thing that the approach of New Year’s Day always does to people is bring out a tendency to fix or spruce up things that are already run down or which need to be repaired to some extent, in an effort to make a fresh start for the new year.  As a result, people’s desire to actually get their old and broken car glass repaired is more likely to be high, and only a little more nudging—such as a coupon discount from a company—may be required to draw out the desired reaction.

Will my auto body shop repair previously existing damage?

autoinsurance_14_600

Some damage that your car sustains is either too negligible or too expensive for you to do anything about it. As long as the car can get you where you need to be without any problem, you might not see much use in spending any money on the repairs. If you happen to get into a serious car accident, you might think about getting the previous damage repaired by your auto body shop along with the new damage and seeing if your insurance company will foot the bill for everything.

The Old and the New

The truth is that if you try to claim that the old damage on your car is part of the new damage it will be considered as insurance fraud. Your insurance company will take a close look at the damage and they’ll be able to tell what damage is part of your accident and what damage is from a previous incident. You have to realize that insurance companies have been doing this for a while and know that some of their customers try to get one over on them, so they’ll examine the damage and your insurance claim with the utmost level of scrutiny. You’d be better off not trying to falsify your claim and outright ask the insurance adjuster if there’s any way they can pay for the old damage. The worst thing they can say is no and the best is yes, there’s no harm in trying. Your next viable option is for you to simply go ahead and pay for the old damage yourself while your car is in the auto body shop.

Pre-Existing Damage

Even if your insurance adjuster isn’t able to tell that the old damage wasn’t caused by your auto accident, a good auto mechanic and collision repair expert (like us at Grand Sport)  most likely will. So even if you think you’ve gotten one over on your insurance company in the beginning, there’s no guarantee the insurance company won’t find out later, because we work with the insurance company throughout the repair process and it’s our duty to let the insurance companies know if we think there is damage that we believe wasn’t part of the current incident . There’s even the possibility that your insurance company won’t pay as much as they originally offered for your new accident. Honesty truly is always the best policy for everyone.

In the event that the old damages and the new damages are in the same place, your insurance adjuster might say that you and your vehicle are no worse off than you were before. If this is the case, you might have to learn how to do some savvy negotiating in order to get any of the damage repaired.

When to Report an Accident

If you’re involved in a minor accident, you might be tempted to not call either the police or let your insurance company know. Maybe that’s how you sustained your pre-existing damage in the first place. If the total amount of the damage is less than $1,000, you don’t have to call the police, but keep in mind that that $1,000 limit includes the damage done to both cars. If anyone is injured in the accident, no matter how minor that accident is, it’s best if you call the police, even if the injury itself is minor. This is for your protection as much as it is for the injured person. You never know if they’ll want to come back and blame you for the constant crick in their neck and try to sue you. There’s also the chance that after you leave the other driver will call the police and you could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident, which is a serious conviction.

While you aren’t required to call the police if the damage is less than $1,000, you should still get in touch with your insurance company, even if that means your insurance rates will go up. It’s better that you know for a fact that your insurance rates will be higher instead of living each day with unease worrying about if your insurance company will somehow find out and penalize you.

You should always be honest with your auto insurance company, even if it means you have to spend more money. Spending extra money is always preferable to losing your insurance completely or being sued for thousands of dollars.  It’s best for your auto body shop doing the repair, your insurance company, and of course YOU!

Battery Replacement At Atlantic Car Care In Wilmington

Hello, welcome to Atlantic Car Care. Today’s focus is batteries. It seems like everything in Wilmington runs on batteries. Of course, the batteries we’re most concerned with here at Atlantic Car Care are those in our customer’s vehicles. Just like the batteries in our smoke detectors or TV remote, car batteries wear out and need to be replaced. There are a couple of things Wilmington drivers should know when looking for a new battery.

Look for two measurements that come into play: cold cranking amps and reserve capacity.

Let’s start with cold cranking amps. Battery Replacement At Atlantic Car Care This can be thought of as the power output used to start a cold sedans engine. The number of cold cranking amps you need depends on your vehicle and where you live in North Carolina, specifically how cold it is. (Many North Carolina motorists have first-hand experience trying to start their car on a cold winter morning.) The two factors are that the colder your sedans’s engine is, the more power it takes to turn the engine over to get it started. It has all that cold, sluggish oil to contend with.

The other factor is that the chemical reaction in the battery that creates electrical energy is less efficient when the temperature dips. At Atlantic Car Care, we consult the table shown below. Let’s say it’s eighty degrees Fahrenheit in Wilmington. At that temperature, 100% of the battery’s power is available. At freezing, only 65% of battery power is available, but it requires 155% as much power to start the engine as it did at eighty degrees.

As you can see from the chart, the colder it gets, more power’s needed, but the available power drops.

Percent of Power Available Celsius Fahrenheit Power Required
100 27 80 100
65 0 32 155
40 -22 0 210
25 -32 20 350

So if you live where it’s cold in North Carolina, you need a battery with more cold cranking amps than you do where it’s moderate or hot. The battery that originally came with your sedans was based on averages. At Atlantic Car Care, we like to remind Wilmington motorists that they should always get at least as many cold cranking amps as their manufacturers recommend, but may want to upgrade if they live where it gets real cold.

And the type of engine you have will impact the battery you need: A six-cylinder engine requires more cold cranking amps than a four. An eight cylinder needs even more. And diesel sedanss require more than a gasoline engine with the same number of cylinders.

Now on to reserve capacity: It’s a measurement of the number of minutes of reserve power the battery has at a given load. The number is more important to Wilmington motorists these days because of parasitic drain. Parasitic drain is the battery energy that’s used when the key is off in your sedans. So, the power drawn by the security system, the remote start system, even the power the computers require to maintain their memory.

Reserves are also needed when you make very short trips around Wilmington. You’re not driving long enough for the battery to recover the energy it used to start the engine. So go with the minimum recommended by your manufacturer or Atlantic Car Care and upgrade if you need more.

Talk with us at Atlantic Car Care about your options. If you need more from your battery, a larger, heavy-duty battery may be called for. At Atlantic Car Care in Wilmington, we remind our customers that it’s very important that the new battery fits your sedans: the terminals can’t be touching other parts.

Batteries are a big ticket item for most North Carolina motorists, so the warranty gives piece of mind. There’re two kinds of car battery warranties: pro-rated and free replacement. With the pro-rated, you get a credit for a portion of the battery if it fails during the warranty period. With a free replacement warranty, you get just that, a free replacement. Be sure to ask us at Atlantic Car Care about the warranty so you know what you’re getting.
