How To Drive Mountain Roads

Here on the Monterey Peninsula, we have a few windy roads that go through the hills and peaks. Not everyone is familiar or comfortable driving on mountain roads, so here are a few safety tips from Roadtrip America that can help prevent accidents:

  1. Make sure that your brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater, and exhaust systems are in good condition.

  2. Don’t go down a mountain road any faster than you can go up it.

  3. On steep upgrades, downshift to a lower gear, watch the temperature gauge in your vehicle, and turn off the air-conditioning if it starts to overheat.

  4. Don’t “hug” the center line. DON’T EVER CROSS THE CENTER LINE or you could find yourself in a head-on collision!!!

  5. Always remember that the car going UPHILL should be given the right of way.

  6. Slowing down for any reason, whether it’s to view scenery or because of a steep grade, is acceptable road behavior, as long as you maintain awareness.

  7. Always carry extra drinking water, and remember to drink fluids throughout the day.

  8. In the event that weather conditions deteriorate into fog, rain, wind, or snow, slow down, be more observant, and demonstrate extra road courtesy.

  9. To prevent fatigue, take frequent breaks.

  10. If you MUST take an unexplored, unpaved side road, make sure you check weather conditions, tell someone where you are going, and drive very carefully.
