The Safest Times To Be On The Road

Driving Safely in Pennsylvania

This is Article 3 of our February blog topic, “PA Driving Stats That May Shock You”.    By looking at statistics and real life data, we’re hoping to show Pennsylvania drivers that accidents can happen at anytime and when we least expect it.    It may sound odd that a collision repair shop would try and prevent you from getting into an accident…..after all, our main source of revenue is repairing your car AFTER an accident.  But at the end of day our families and friends all drive on the same highways and roadways that you do.  Their safety, and yours, is our main concern.  To see the actual statistics referenced in this article, check out PENNDOT’s report on Pennsylvania drivers.   Previous Articles in this series:  Article 1 / Article 2

Fact: Less Accident Deaths Occur in the Morning Hours During February

When you own a car, you do all you can to drive safely and defensively to avoid accidents and higher insurance premiums. When you are a careful driver, you are likely do things like drive the speed limit, keep an eye on other cars, and avoid roads that you are unfamiliar with. But there may be some factors that influence when accidents occur that you may not have even considered. The day of the week, the time of the day, and the month you are driving can influence how many accidents occur..

Least Deaths From Accidents In February….

In the state of Pennsylvania, the month of February has the least amount of deaths related to car accidents. July proved to be the most dangerous month while October was a close second with only one less car accident related death. Not only was February the month when the least amount of deadly car accidents occurred, it was also the month when the smallest amount of total accidents occurred. According to data from 2011, it would appear that it is safest to drive in the month of February.

The time of day also appeared to be a factor in when accidents needing collision repair occurred. While the early morning was not the least likely to see accidents, it was the least likely to have accidents that included fatalities. 8:00 AM appears to be the safest time to be on the road, with five PM being the most dangerous. From the data, it can be deduced that driving in the afternoon to early evening is not as safe as driving in the morning.

Reasons And Explanations

What Do The Statistics Tell Us

Some of the explanations for this data are simple and easy to comprehend. For example, the fact that more fatalities occur on the weekends can be based on the fact that more people are on the road on the weekends. It’s also probable that more drivers have been out late without much sleep, and may even have been involved in drugs and alcohol before getting behind the wheel of a car. Any of these factors can increase motor vehicle accidents and the need for collision repair.

The time of day can also be explained by the fact that many people are on their commute home in the afternoon and early evening. This is also the time that many drivers will get drowsy after a long day of work, and their driving may be impaired because of this.

While some of the data can be explained with common sense, there are other factors that may either by coincidence or due to some unknown variable that hasn’t yet been measured. Either way, past statistics shows us that Pennsylvania Drivers are typically safer driving at 8:00 AM on Wednesdays during the month of February.
