This is Article 4 of our February blog series, “PA Driving Stats That May Shock You”. In this series, we’re breaking down real life statistics taken from PENNDOT’s report on Pennsylvania Accidents. Check out the previous Articles in this series: Article 1 | Article 2 | Article 3
Fact: The Deadliest Holidays Are New Years, Thanksgiving & Christmas
It’s a well-known fact that the roads are busier on the holidays. Some holidays also increase the amount of drunk drivers on the road, and most increase the amount of families that are traveling to and from a destination. Most drivers do their best to be safe and avoid the need for auto body collision repair, but it’s unfortunate that safe drivers can’t account for all those who are not as careful with their vehicles and driving habits. In order to drive safely on the roads and keep your family safe, you must first understand which holidays are most likely to find you involved in a car accident.
Most Likely Holidays For Accidents
The statistics state interestingly enough that the holidays more likely to cause accidents are not necessarily the holidays that cause the most fatalities. This may be because the accidents that occur on certain holidays may be more severe and more dangerous. The following holidays are when the most accidents occurred in the state of Pennsylvania in 2011.
- Post-New Years holiday
- Post-Thanksgiving travel
- Pre-Thanksgiving travel
- Pre-Christmas travel
- Thanksgiving
When looking at these statistics, it may seem that traveling before or after a holiday increase your chances of ending up in the auto body collision repair shop. One reason for this could be that most people do their traveling before and after the actual holiday, and tend to spend the day of the holiday with their families in their homes. With fewer cars on the road, there are fewer accidents to happen.
The New Year holiday has traditionally been associated with parties and alcohol for many people. This may factor into the amount of accidents that tend to occur the day after the holiday. Many individuals are tired from a long night of partying the night before, or are simply dealing with the after effects of too much drinking and being out with friends. This can easily impair the ability to handle a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
The Deadliest Holidays To Drive
Along with the most accidents, there are holidays that resulted in more deaths than any other holiday. Some of them are:
- Post-Independence day travel
- Memorial Day
- Thanksgiving
- Labor Day
- Post-Thanksgiving travel
In the instances of the most deaths, it would appear that the actual holidays themselves might be more deadly.
One reason that fatalities may be increased on certain holidays could be that drivers are rushing to get from place to place. If you spend Thanksgiving Day with your family, but have to hurry back for work or to visit your in-laws, you may speed up your driving to a point that is not safe in order to compensate for spending as much time as possible with family. Even with fewer drivers on the road, those who are on the road are driving faster, and may cause more serious accidents with more tragic deaths.
Many people travel on the holidays, and it’s an important tradition that should be continued. The holidays should be spent with family, but safe driving must also be a consideration each time you make the trip to visit your family. Rather than spending the holiday with your auto body collision repair shop, you should be relaxing and enjoying the time off from work with your family. This article goes to show that the Christmas/Thanksgiving time of year may have the most accidents, but the most deaths occur on July 4th and Memorial Day. In fact, according to <a href=”http://www.safemotorist.com/articles/deadliest_days_on_the_road.aspx” title=”Safemotorist.com Driving Statistics”>SafeMotorist.com</a>, July 4th has historically been the deadliest day of the year to drive since statistics began to be recorded in 1986.
