2013 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive – A Review

Electric vehicles are gaining an interest in the car market as many customers have shown likeness towards them. However, the fear of getting fires and the high entry costs of the EVs is always there. With upto 10 electric vehicles on the market, the customers have now got more choices to select from. The 2013 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive is one of them.

Overview

Smart’s third-generation all-electric coupe and cabriolet are the new cars that are expected to arrive next spring. The purpose is to introduce eco- friendly vehicles that can roll out easily in urban areas. With the curb weight of  1,808 lbs, 2013 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive would lead to zero emissions. But the “pain at the pump ” will be replaced by the pain of finding a plug.

Exterior

The pure electric cabriolet offers a smart exterior with a convertible roof that has a remote-controlled soft top. It can be closed in seconds at high speeds. You can choose exterior colors from red, blue, gray, white, silver or black.

The interior is comfortable and spacious.  A semi-soft fabric pasted atop a hard plastic enhances the car’s interior.

How it works??

It runs on the lithium-ion battery that consists of 93 modules. It can be charged by any household socket .The 17.6 kWh electric battery recharges efficiently and you get a power to drive. For a quicker recharge you can install a 240-volt charging station. It requires about 7 hours to go from 0% to 100%.

Powertrain

The 2013 Smart Electric Drive is powered by a 17.6 kilowatt-hour engine that gives an output power of 74 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. The driving and handling is easy and you get a vigorous and sporty ride. The upgraded battery pack makes it more demanding. The 55 kilowatt magneto-electric motor with a single-speed transmission gives it a power boost. The three levels of charging are available. From which  two of are for consumers i-e  basic and connected. It can cover a range of estimated 90 miles.

Safety

Active and passive safety systems are offered on this EV. The battery is positioned in such a way in the vehicle to enhance the protection even in case of collision.

Pricing and availability

It will be available at a base  price of $25,000 MSRP. The basic home charging requires $1,300 plus installation while for connected charging station you need another $400.
